PEOPLE Places & Things

Mrs. Asa Groves, 709 N. Greenway Dr., will be hostess for the first meeting of the new year, Miami Women's Panhellenic at 10:45 a.m. Saturday. Mrs. Henry Sikir, the new president, will preside. Hostesses will be members of Kappa Delta and Gamma Phi Beta. * * * Ens. Edwin C. Lunsford Jr., USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin C. Lunsford, 1501 Sunset Dr., completed his solo flight May 3 at Pensacola. He will now enter advanced training at either Pensacola or Meridian, Miss. * * * Mary Ellen Kibby, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Kibby, 430 San Servando Ave., is scheduled to graduate tomorrow (Friday) with a degree of bachelor of arts at the University of Colorado, Boulder, Colo. * * * A linen and silk tussah ensemble made by Mrs. John Powell, 901 Alava Ave., won third prize of $250 in a nationwide fashion sewing contest to select the "ideal costume for the clubwoman's wardrobe." The contest is sponsored by the General Federation of Women's Clubs in cooperation with Vogue Pattern Service. Mrs. Powell also won a special award of $100 for her club. * * * Julia F. Morton, director of the Morton Collectanea, University of Miami, will attend the meeting June 16-17 of the Society for Economic Botany in Washington, D.C. and will present a paper, "Spanish Needles (Bidens pilosa) as a Wild Food Resource." Miss Morton resides at 3010 Segovia St. Earlier she attended the meeting of the American Society of Pharmacognosy at the West Virginia University. * * * Herbert S. Saffir, 461 Loretta Ave., went back to his alma mater, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, for the May 19 Tau Beta Pi, scholastic honorary initiation of 29 new members of which Saffir was one. Saffir, a local consulting engineer, was graduated in 1940. * * * Mrs. Ira Willard, 1015 Catalonia Ave., is home after six weeks with her sister, Virginia (Mrs. G. P.) Calles in Surry, Va. It was a sad mission due to the passing of Virginia's husband. While in Virginia she visited daughter Frances who attends St. Agnes School for Girls in Alexandria, Va. * * * Miss Susan Kinzer, 38 Fonseca Ave., was one among 100 winners of a "starter set" of sterling silver and china crystal in Reed & Barton's 1962 silver opinion competition.

LARRY CASSEL

Larry L. Cassel, 331 Capri St., will go on active duty with the Army's Ordnance Corps, today (Thursday). Larry completed requirements for his degree, an A.B. with a major in psychology last year, at Lafayette College and has been employed in Miami. * * * Joseph A. Tucker is one of 30 teachers of French selected to participate in a seven week (June 25-Aug. 11th) summer language institute at the Woman's College of Georgia Mr. Tucker teaches French at Coral Gables High School. * * * Thomas Paul Wolff of Coral Gables was one of 50 graduating Friday at Howey co-educational Academy, Howey-in-the Hills. * * * James Edward Phifer Jr., 3519 Toledo St., was among 38 graduating seniors commissioned in ceremony at Florida State University, Saturday. Phifer was commissioned in the U.S. Army Reserves. * * * Mrs. Pauline Adams, mother of Larry Adams, 1461 Mendavia Ave., left this week for California where she will visit her daughter, Mrs. Vera Jane Shaw of Arcadia, and two grandchildren, Teresa and Steve. The Larry Adamses have three boys, Larry Jr., nine, Ron, seven and Thad, two. Their mother says the two older boys have built a tree house, of which they are quite proud.

* * * The Coral Gables Business and Professional Women's Club held its May brunch and installation recently at Riviera Country Club. Peg Manning, charter president of the club, will install the officers. President-elect is Marge Powers, first vice president, Alice Partridge, second vice president, Marjorie Clark. Third vice president, Rose Walthers; recording secretary, Mary Nix; corresponding secretary, Beatrice Myers; and treasurer, Amelia Sanders. The major project of the club is the maintenance of the Dr. Adele Hampton Memorial Nursing Scholarship Loan Fund, at the University of Miami, making yearly contributions to this fund.

UM Slates Graduation On Tuesday

Our home town university-UM-will graduate 1,012 students at commencement exercises Tuesday, at Miami Beach Convention Hall. Degrees will be conferred for the last time by Dr. Jay F. W. Pearson, president, soon to become chancellor. William A. Patterson, president of United Air Lines, will address the graduating class. His topic: "A Return to Responsibility." Rabbi Irving Lehrman of Temple Emanu-El, will give the invocation and John D. Needham, brigadier, Salvation Army, the benediction. Among the graduates will be 60 new doctors, 48 attorneys, three Ph.D's, one Ed.D. Of the total, 797 will be undergraduates receiving baccalaureate degrees.

Locks Changed

Following the misappropriation of Chamber of Commerce property, the locks on the buildings at 50 Aragon Ave. have been changed. The Chambers Board of Directors was told last week by Manager Lee Smith that it has been impossible to determine how the Chamber's printing name plates were made available for use by Mayor Robert Searle. He reported the Mayor said he doesn't know either. The Chamber's mailing list was one of several used in Searle's behalf in his bid to be elected to the State Democratic Executive Committee. Mayor Searle said some of his campaign workers must have obtained the list, never made available for such use, Chamber Manager Smith said.

BUS QUESTIONNAIRE

Failure of people to answer the 5,000 questionnaires sent out by Metro to determine the need for bus service along Coral Way and Bird Road is hurting chances of getting service, a proponent said Monday.

GOODE 'CRITICAL'

Robert Goode, 26, 7720 SW 60th Ave., was critically injured shortly after 2 a.m. Tuesday morning when his car slammed into a utility pole just north of SW 80th Street and South Dixie Highway in South Miami. Goode, whose 1954 model car was demolished in the crash, was listed in "critical" condition at South Miami Hospital.
