YOUTH CENTER ACTIVITIES

RECREATION JAMBOREE The Coral Gables Youth Center will blast off to a record-breaking summer program starting June 25. To launch this program the public is invited to the big Recreation Jamboree which will take place on the Youth Center Field Jun 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. This Jamboree is a demonstration of all the activities that are offered to teenagers, children and adults during the coming season. This demonstration will include the Boys Baseball team in uniform and a baseball drill team, with bats, gymnastic demonstration, ballet-acrobatic, tap dancing group. Judo, fencing track exhibition, tumbling exhibition on home-made apparatus, dog training show. Adult guitar class selections, archery demonstration, songs, basketball group. Children from Learn to Swim Program, clowns, skin and scuba equipment display, modeling group. Folk songs, Tiny Tot program, Baton group, juggling class, rollerskating group, twisters, slimmastics. Sculpture, writing workshop, tropical crafts display, sewing display, Spanish class, yoga demonstration, ceramics display, Day Campers in force. Golf exhibition, tennis instructor, swimming, introduction to public library. After the demonstration there will be a block dance, and everyone is invited. There will also be an information booth set up and you can pick up the new Youth Center Summer Program and printed information regarding classes here at the Center and cards will be available to anyone interested in signing up for one or all of our classes. CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP The Coral Gables Youth Center and Chess Club are proud that one of their members is a champion. Mrs. Adel Goddard of 4370 SW 5th Ter., won the U.S. Women's Amateur Chess Championship at Asbury, N.J. Mrs. Goddard made a special trip to compete in this tournament along with 155 men and women amateurs. Mrs. Goddard's score was 3-3 (5 games were against men and her last game was against another woman.) Mrs. Goddard received a beautiful trophy. She is a member of the Coral Gables Chess Club and gets all her practice by playing with members in the club. POOL WINNER The teen - room was the center of attraction when 16 teen-agers participated in the Memorial Day Pool Tournament. Edward Castellanos, of 1510 Genoa St., 13, won first place and was awarded a trophy for his ability and sportsmanship. PARTY PARTY The Party Planning and Social Recreation Workshop ended in May with a two-hour party planned and carried out by the students. Many of the activities used were taught by the Youth Center Staff to the students in the previous five sessions. The party planning workshop was attended by about 30 homemakers and active church and civic group participants. There will be another series of Party Planning Workshops (free of charge) held in the early Fall. GIRLS SOFTBALL Girls interested in joining a Girls Softball Team may do so now. Barbara Bein will take registration every day, Monday through Saturday in the teen room. There are two age groups, Elementary and Teenagers. Ed Russo Is Elected

ED RUSSO ... People to People Edmund P. Russo, Coral Gables attorney, has been elected president of the People to People Program. He succeeds Mrs. Lucile Neher. Keith Wheeling was elected vice president. Mrs. I. Q. Rayburn is treasurer. Robert Hosken is secretary. And Mrs. Esther Martin is the new historian. Russo, who lives at 1101 Sunset Rd., will take over his first meeting Tuesday at Tylers' Restaurant when the Board of Directors meets to kick off a new year.

Chamber Taps Committee Heads; UM's Gables Role Acknowledged

Fifteen committee chairmen have been named by the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce and a 16th and new committee established. The new group will be in charge of relationships between the Gables and the University of Miami. Seed operator Ed Crowley is chairman. This group, operating informally, handled the recent Know Your University Week program which included a public band concert on the mall on Ponce de Leon. President Al Jacobson has said that committees will be the keystone of the Chamber's program this year. Seven of the 15 existing committees were reappointments. They are Dr. Philip Chastain, Boosters; William Swain, Business Education; Robert Bradley, Christmas Decorations. Owen Freed, International Affairs, William Gale, Junior Orange Bowl; Joe Murphy, Membership Drive; and Fred Hartnett, Sunday Closing. New committeemen are James Hartnett, Civic Affairs; Bernie Blanck, Membership Contact; Paul School, Retail Merchants Division; Frank (Mort) Guilford, Traffic and Parking; and Robert Hildreth, Program of Work.
