LINES OF disappointment are in the face of little Joe Audie, 1132 Valencia Ave. When he went over to Salvadore Park Monday with his older brother, Peter, he found no one his own size. So he crawled up against this tennis net post with his racquet and sat here. This is how we found him. (Times photo by Raymond Lang),
Rumors to the Contrary, Prom's Not Dead--Byrd
No Junior-Senior Prom next year at Coral Gables High? It just isn't so said William Byrd, assistant principal. Byrd denied also reports of heavy drinking during the recent prom held at Bayfront Park auditorium. (See letter to the editor on page 4). "She is very much uninformed," said Byrd of the parent who wrote to complain about teenage drinking at the prom. Byrd, who was present, said only one intoxicated student was removed from the dance and denied that the student passed out. "Apparently this woman doesn't know anything," said Byrd. The writer said she got her information from her daughter who attended the prom and returned to relate the drinking activities including the hiding of liquor bottles under the "Eiffel Towers" — table decorations. Byrd said he did not go around smelling the breath of teenagers, but a careful check was kept to prohibit drinking. "We have more police than any other school," he said. Gables High employed three policemen for the dance. The assistant principal said the junior — and senior proms may be separated next year because of the number of students, but there is no plan to abandon the socials. There have been rumors among the student body that the prom would be abandoned entirely.
