GETTING AROUND
Continued from page 2 From Helen S. Phillips, who lives near Littleton, Colorado, we understand there is an excellent orchestra formed each summer out in Estes Park, called the Blue Jeans Symphony. It is composed of outstanding young musicians from high schools and colleges all over the country, who spend their vacations working on ranches and resorts in the area while studying music. Aside from the quality of their performances, what distinguishes this group is the fact that all of the young musicians wear blue jeans at every concert, while conductor Walter Charles sports a set of specially tailored blue-denim tails. In Glen Burnie, Maryland, the Don Carpenters have a praying mantis, and they're taking very good care of it, knowing how valuable these small creatures are in the garden (they eat all kinds of undesirable insects). Peggy Carpenter found the mantis half-frozen a while back, named it "Mr. Fiddle-Sticks," and decided to adopt it. "Mr." turned out to be a female, who laid a mass of eggs on the kitchen window, so now the Carpenters are looking forward to having about 100 tiny praying mantis to put to work in their garden. Meantime, Mr. Fiddle-Sticks is living high on raw hamburger, dead flies, herring roe, hardboiled eggs, raw liver, and likes melted ice cream for dessert. It will only drink water or milk from a silver spoon and has refused to touch a beverage in a plastic spoon. After meals, which it eats with great gusto, it washes up carefully, just the way a cat does. A Grosse Pointe, Michigan, woman whose son had just got married was asked if she was going to visit the young couple, who had settled in California. "Not yet," she wisely replied, "I'm waiting until they have their first baby. You see, I have a theory that grandmas are more welcome than mothers-in-law." You can get a new insight into the electronics age by strolling along Compo Beach at Westport, Connecticut, any sun-swept day during the weekend. Several itinerant waiters and two walkie-talkie radios now make it possible for lazy sun bathers to place orders and receive deliveries from the beach pavilion without having to interrupt their pleasure for even one warm moment. The walkie-talkie-equipped waiters simply take your order, phone it in, and within a few minutes a colleague cycles up the beach with it. When Mark and Melvin Smith became carrier boys for the Valley Times Today in Quartz Hills, California, they formed a wonderful partnership that cuts down their delivery time and offers them a lot of fun, too. The boys have a tandem bicycle which one pedals while the other throws the papers. And there are never any arguments because the boys swap positions every day. In St. Louis County, Missouri, there's a sign at a local tourist agency that reads: "Missouri Loves Company."
