'Keep It Beautiful' Candidate Puts Integrity Of Gables In Platform
"A dynamic program to advance the best interest of Coral Gables, maintaining its integrity as the most beautiful and attractive residential community in the country." This is the platform of Henry G. Simmonite, attorney and former Army infantry colonel, who announced his candidacy for the City Commission last week. Simmonite, a widower, was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1928, the New York Bar in 1938 and to practice before the U. S. Supreme Court in 1945. Member of Bar He is a member of the Dade County, Florida and American Bar Associations and the Bar Association of New York City. Simmonite is active in the Military Order of the World Wars, an organization of officers of World Wars and the Korean War. He is junior vice commander in chief of the organization. Following World War II, Simmonite was in charge of the mission to find and return to Hungary St. Stephan's Hand, the Hungarian sacred relic. For his work, the then Hungarian government and the Catholic church honored him. Prior to that, he had served with the 9th Infantry Division and the War Department General Staff between 1942-47. He served in England, North Africa, Italy, Austria and Hungary. It was on duty as chief of staff, American Military Representation in the Allied Control Commission of Hungary, that he received the unusual assignment of locating the sacred relic. Received Commendation For this he received a certificate of commendation and he was also awarded the bronz star for his World War II service. Simmonite is a graduate of the Infantry School and Command and General Staff College. He was discharged with the rank of colonel in 1947 and returned to Coral Gables, where he has lived most of his life. Simmonite is a member of Coral Gables Chapter Reserve Association, Army & Navy Club of Coral Gables, Coral Gables Country Club, Beach Colony Club, University of Florida and Miami Alumni Associations, American Legion and the Elks Club. He is also a vestryman in Stephen's Episcopal Church and vice chancellor of the Diocese of South Florida. Simmonite has supported the beautification program in Coral Gables. His law office is in Miami and he resides at 644 Altara. HENRY SIMMONITE
