'Mortgage Mile', It Was Called By Scoffers

"Mortgage Mile"-that's what the scoffers called it. They saw only what met the eye in the early 1940s. The four-block stretch of Coral Way from the eastern city limits of Coral Gables to City Hall was mostly pine-dotted vacant lots. Here and there were a few buildings, m[os]t of them dating back to boom days. It was Coral Gable's great good fortune that an energetic promoter, George K. Zain, saw something far different. Zain envisioned a street of smart shops-a major shopping district that would attract people from all over South Florida. From that vision developed the beautiful business street that Gableites proudly call the Miracle Mile. It wasn't accomplished overnight. Other Coral Way property owners joined with Zain in forming the Miracle Mile Association. By promotion, persuasion and an occasional bit of bludgeoning, smart new store buildings were erected, tenants pledged to quality standards were found, an atmosphere of distinction was gradually developed. Success Bred Success Success bred success. A whole street of shops with crisp modern decorative motifs, universal air conditioning and an absence of blatant signs and clamorous sales tactics became a reality. As discriminating shoppers adopted "the Mile" as their favorite shopping district, more and more merchants moved in. Today more than 150 retail establishments are found here. This abundance of choice is one of the secrets of the appeal which the Miracle Mile makes to its customers. Here is no mere "shopping center", with a dozen or two of the type of stores usually found in such centers. This is a huge department store-all on one level. Shop after shop, in infinite variations of quality and price, make a shopping day a series of adventures instead of a harrowing grind. On all sides of Miracle Mile, other Coral Gables shopping streets add a wealth of selection and variety found in few other Florida shopping districts.

American Ballet Theatre's First Three Weeks On Tour Success

Eleven "sold out" performances in the first 12 cities and a successful world premiere of Brubeck's new jazz ballet highlighted the first three weeks of the American Ballet Theater's current tour of 47 U. S. cities. The company also successfully introduced three new ballets for the first time on tour, of the 18 classical and modern ballets in its 1961 tour repertory. They were Birgit Cullberg's two searching and imaginative productions, "Lady From the Sea" and "Miss Julie," both of which have attracted international acclaim and the exciting "Grand Pas Glazounov" from the 3rd Act of Raymonde. The promising start on the current tour was made despite three weeks of almost continuous blizzards, snow and freezing temperatures, wherever the company appeared. World-premiered in Hartford January 16, the new ballet "Points on Jazz," choreographed by Dania Krupska from music by Dave Brubeck, was reviewed favorably and received enthusiastically by the audience. The American Ballet will dance four performances at the Dade County Auditorium, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings and Sunday matinee, Mar. 10-11-12. Tickets are on sale at
