Woman Hurt When Car Hit Broadside

A 54-year-old Miami woman was treated at Veterans Administration Hospital Saturday morning when her car was struck broadside by another vehicle at the intersection of Le Jeune Rd. and Andalusia. The injured driver was identified by Coral Gables police as Mary Josephline McNeil, of 325 NE 107th St. According to Gables Officer Thomas Quirk, she was eastbound on Andalusia shortly after 10:30 a.m. and reportedly stopped at the LeJeune Rd. intersection, but was struck as she pulled out. The driver of the other car, northbound on LeJeune, was identified as Mary Palmer Becker, 29, of 8225 SW 99th St. The injured woman was charged with failing to yield the right of way. Her car sustained an estimated $800 damage. The Becker car's damage was estimated at $100 by Quirk.

Service Held For Mr. Mount

Last rites for Leslie Carter Mount, 644 Navarre Ave., who died Thursday at Coral Gables Veterans Hospital after a short illness were held Saturday. Mr. Mount, who served in both World War I and II, came to Miami 30 years ago and was a public relations man for the city. He held membership in the Military Order of World Wars and the Aviation Association of Greater Miami. He also was a member of the Acacia Club. He leaves his wife, Mary D. Mount of Coral Gables, one son, William C. Mount of Key West, and a daughter, Mrs. Alice M. Green of El Salvadore, and three grandchildren.

Youth Hurt By Golf Ball

Turning the Coral Gables Youth Center into a golf practice range proved dangerous Saturday when a 14-year-old boy was struck in the head. Injured, though not severely, was Ivan Lopez, 6350 SW 65th Ave. He was treated by a private physician for a lump in back of the head. Young Lopez was playing ball at the Center shortly after noon when he was hit by a ball driven by one of two unidentified youths who fled the scene, according to Director Jeannette Hunt.

Driver's License Is Suspended

A 69-year-old Coral Gables man received a two-day suspended sentence, $160 fine and lost his right to drive for six months upon conviction Monday in Metro Court of driving while intoxicated. Judge Thomas N. Balikes also fined William Underschuz, 3915 Segovia Blvd., an additional $50 for reckless driving. Underschuz was arrested Feb. 1 at the intersection of Bird Rd. and University Dr. by Gables Officer Henry Arnand.

He'll Be A Candidate Leo Mahan Turns From Salvaging To City Politics

LEO MAHAN A man whose life has been spent salvaging derelicts of the sea, filed Tuesday morning for Coral Gables City Commissioner. He is 53-year-old Leo F. (Lee) Mahan, 5375 Orduna Dr. Mahan, a native of Michigan, is a third generation marine salvage expert and World War II ship salvage officer with the U. S. Navy. Recently Returned His business carried him to the shores of Florida as well as to those of the Great Lakes. He recently retired as sales engineer with a diesel firm and said he would devote full time to a City Commission post. Mahan claims strong support from local business and civic leaders. "In good health and with a record of civic and public service and experience, I would like very much to have the opportunity to serve Coral Gables in an official capacity. "For the past 16 years I've owned a home here and feel it is the finest city in the nation," Mahan said. Other Activities He is a past president of the Coral Gables Country Club and has been active in the local Lions Club, American Legion, the Army and Navy Club of Coral Gables, Beach Colony Club and the Rod and Reel Club. He is an ardent and accomplished fisherman, whose fishing exploits have taken him all over the Caribbean and Central and South America. Mahan and his wife, Renata, are both on the Junior Orange Bowl Committee. He served on the Dade Grand Jury for six months and also with the U. S. Federal Court and the Court of Civil Record. The candidate was educated in his native Michigan and studied at the University of Michigan and was graduated from Hope College there.

Vandals Take It Out On Shrubs

An outbreak of vandalism was reported by Coral Gables police Friday and Saturday. Vandals uprooted bushes and threw them into the street at Nickey's Bar, 223 Malaga, after destroying a flower box. They also destroyed a palm tree in front of the Riverside Laundry, 245 University Dr. and shrubs were also pulled out and scattered at 255 University Dr. And eggs were splattered against the home and car of Mrs. Allen Bower, 110 Cadima, Friday.

Santacroce's Reports $1500 Loss

Cash and checks totalling between $1500 and $1600 were reported stolen from Santacroce's Restaurant, 1500 South Dixie Hwy., March 1. The thieves forced open the restaurant's front door, obtained a key from a cash register and got into a filing cabinet where the money and checks were located, Coral Gables police said. The door was left open by the burglars as they made their exit.
