RMD Reassured That Authority Still Within It

Fears that the Retail Merchants Division was being relegated to a minor status apparently were allayed at a meeting of the RMD board of directors April 26. But some changes were recommended to the parent Chamber of Commerce to insure the RMD's semi-autonomous status. Fears had been aroused following the recent adoption of new bylaws and policies by the Chamber. Not that the division was in danger of losing its name, but the board agreed they'd like to keep the name Division, rather than committee. The by-laws provide for either name although the word "committee" actually was used for the retail unit. The main fear, however, was that the Chamber would use funds obtained by the RMD for RMD projects and convert them to general use. Paul School, spokesmen for a few RMD members who expressed apprehension about the new by-laws, said he felt certain provisions were an emasculation of the RMD's authority. RMD President Sam Miller, Chamber Manager Lee Smith and author of the by-laws Henry Havig, defended the provisions. They agreed that the language of one section should be changed to insure that the RMD would be free to handle its own funds and projects once projects are approved by the Chamber board of directors. The RMD directors concurred also that it was not the job of the chamber manager or his staff to solicit and collect for ads in connection with various promotions. This should be handled by the advertising agencies or media, they agreed. "We've done it, but we shouldn't do this," Smith said.

Daniels Marries

The Coral Gables Congregational Church was the setting April 29 for the 5 p.m. wedding of Miss Carol J. Riley and Warner B. Daniels. The bride is the daughter of Harold Riley of St. Petersburg, who gave his daughter in marriage, and the late Mrs. Riley. The groom is the son of Mrs. C. S. Daniels of 281 Navarre Ave., and the late Mr. Daniels. The Rev. Fred Cole officiated at the single-ring ceremony. Miss Virginia Riley of St. Petersburg was maid of honor for her sister. Felix Baker was best man for the groom. The reception followed at the home of Dr. G. J. Coleman. The couple will reside at 1429 Blue Road.

LARRY MAPLESDEN is looking ahead now to taking it easy. After 10 years as assistant golf pro at the Coral Gables Country Club, he's retired and plans to live in Orlando.

Holdout Says Yes

The last piece of sidewalk in connection with the Le Jeune Road improvement project was laid last week. Clarence Brandes, whose property at the northeast corner of Le Jeune and Malaga Avenue had been a holdout. Brandes refusing to grant right of way for the new turning radius, finally agreed to let workmen on his property to set the forms.

Stuart is now delivering some 155 papers for The Times, but someday, after college, he wants to enter the administrative side of the newspaper profession. The eighth grader is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Cohen, 221 Viscaya Ave., Stuart's been a Times' carrier for almost three tyears. He has two routes, roughly running from Bird Road, Ponce de Leon Boulevard, Camilo and Santander Avenues to Segovia Avenue. At 12 cents per paper a month, Stuart earns $18.60 a month. Enough to help him keep up his stamp collection (his favorite is his 'Project Mercury with Col. John Glenn's space capsule). Stuart plans to attend the University of Michigan, where he expects to major in math, which, along with American History, is his favorite subject in school. STUART COHEN
