4 Children & Edna Plus Sense Of Service Run Al Jacobson

THE JACOBSON FAMILY FINDS HAPPINESS IN MUSIC By RAYMOND LANG Times Reporter Who is this man Al Jacobson? When he buys a gift for his wife, Edna, he gets something for all his four children so no one feels left out. If he buys a tie for himself, he makes sure his two sons can also wear it. And he loves to play the accordion to help him get away from the every day pressures. He's a Gableite. He's a merchant. He's won a host of awards that, if laid end-to-end would stretch from Miracle Mile to Douglas Road (well nearly). And he's our new president of the Chamber of Commerce. "I think he's tops," his wife said, sitting in the tiny, cluttered office of their stationery store on the Mile. "He never forgets an occasion. And when my little fella, Peter, got on patrol one year, I called him (Al) and said, 'You know, Peter got on patrol.' "And he ran right out and bought a cake." This tells us one thing about Jacobson. His children. They're so very important to him. "And if he goes out and buys a Valentine cake for me," Mrs. Jacobson went on, "he'll buy something for everybody. "He doesn't want anyone to feel neglected." This tells us a second thing. Jacobson is considerate. Al likes to go shopping with his wife. "Actually, I do better alone," she confided. "Al likes to browse, picking up little delicacies he and the children can eat..." The Jacobsons call home a modest, brick-faced house on a quiet street, 1243 Catalonia Ave. Al hesitates to talk about himself. He'll answer your question with a hurried, but polite, reply and then channel the conversation to his children. The children are Susan, 19, a nursing student at Vanderbilt University; Harvey, 16; Peter, 12; and Barbara, 10. But while he's reticent to talk about the honors our town has given him, plaques of his achievements hang on the wall of his reading room. They tell you of Temple Judea naming him Man of the Year, and that the Coral Gables Jaycees presented him the first David Hendrick Outstanding Citizen Award. "We try to give our family as much time as possible," he said, though working on the Advertising Advisory Board and serving as chairman of the Citizen's Transit Committee consume much of his time. "We like to get together evenings and Sunday evenings and play together," he continued. All the Jacobsons, except the mother, play a musical instrument. "We try not to play too often," Al said regretfully, "because of the neighbors. "But we play in the summertime. We close all the windows and turn on the air conditioning. I'm what you'd call a frustrated musician. "Music," he went on, saying the word lovingly," is a terrific outlet. "And it's important that people have a means of escaping from every day pressure."
