The Coral Gables Times

WHAT DOES a multi-millionaire give himself on his birthday, especially when it's his 95th? Arthur Vining Davis is building himself this quarter-million dollar, 12-room home, which will be ready this month, the same as his birthday. It's next to his older home, built in the early 1930's on Old Cutler Road. When the older home broke a water tank and needed a few other repairs, one of the nation's wealthiest men decided to forego the repairs and build this new home. (Staff Photo)

Judge Acquits 3 of Picketing

Three men were acquitted of picketing charges by Judge Charles Spooner in Coral Gables Municipal Court Tuesday night. Charges were pressed by Harry M. Barton, of 8008 Leonardo St., who was the general contractor for the $3,000 addition to Deel Motors, 4811 Le Jeune Rd. Barton said he observed Harry M. Price, of 2152 SW 23rd Ter., and W. A. Woodal, for three hours "walking back and forth" on the Le Jeune Road sidewalk on April 18. One carried a sandwich board sign, but Barton could not recall what it said. April 19 Barton observed James Milton Thomas, of 9760 SW 60th St., who, he said, represented the glaziers' union. Thomas was seen walking in the same area, but without a sign board. Plaintiff charged that the men prevented his non-union workers from entering the job, But there was no evidence to support this. Coral Gables has an ordinance against picketing of any kind or loitering near a building to prevent others from entering that business establishment.

110-Hours and He's Tired

Lewis Ikenson, owner of the Hofbrau Bar, at 172 Giralda, Ave. received a $250 suspended sentence from Judge Charles Spooner in Coral Gables Municipal Court Tuesday night for selling beer to four male minors. Owner for the past four and a half years, Ikenson said he puts in 110 hours a week. "I must have been over-tired and didn't check the boy's I.D. cards," he told the Judge. The suspended fine works on a day to day basis, according to the judge. If Ikenson should appear in court on a similiar charge and found guilty, his fine will start at $250.
