Not much of a garden till you put in a few flowers and a lot of sheared box—then it has everything. If a fruit tree in the round would take up too much space, spread it out against the side of the house. heat may be an asset in the far north, however, protecting blossoms from untimely frost nips and assisting in ripening the fruit in autumn. Another way of livening the garden picture is to shear plants. Hedges are commonplace, of course, but one need not limit oneself to box shapes. Indeed many evergreen and deciduous plants may be sheared into architectural and fantastic shapes, an art that is called "topiary." This craft dates back even beyond the Roman Empire, when garden slaves sheared living plants into replicas of ships, fantastic animals, and birds, as well as intricate geometric shapes.
