Fascell Punches Back in Talk

U.S. Rep. Dante Fascell, goaded into an active campaign by unrelenting pressure for his Fourth Congressional District opponent, State Representative David Eldredge, launched into a strong counter-attack at the April 27 Rotary Club meeting here. Fresh from TV combat the night before, Fascell's arms cut the air like a rapier as he emphasized his points to the large turnout of Rotarians and their guests. "My opponent is trying to tag me as a wild-eyed spender," said Fascell. The charge isn't true, said Fascell. Fascell admitted that there has been waste, but added that on the whole the operation of the government has been efficient. The heavy expenditures aimed at stopping the Reds were the result of bi-partisan agreement, the speaker said. Adoptions of former president Herbert Hoover's recommendations, he said, resulted in the saving of billions of dollars annually. The budget, said Fascell, has little relations to appropriations or spending. As a matter of fact, Fascell said, the budget bears little relation to anything. Every year a president presents a balanced budget and every year there is a deficit, he told the Rotarians. Former President Dwight Eisenhower's last budget was balanced, he observed, and wound up $12.5 billion in the red. This imbalance results from the rate of expenditures and difficulty in estimating revenue. "A sixth grade kid ought to know that," said Fascell. He said he wasn't worried about the national debt. "We're going to pay if off," he predicted. Most of it resulted from World War II, he said, and we have the ability to pay if off.
