Chair Car A new battery-run chair on wheels fits into your auto trunk—and simplifies shopping, commuting, and golfing

New lightweight cart can be used by a commuter to take him to the station on fair days. Once there, he hops off, locks it, and leaves it until he returns—or until his wife comes to get it in their automobile and take it home. NOW—WITHOUT LEAVING your easy chair—you can shop your favorite supermarket, run neighborhood errands without straining an arch, dash for your morning bus in sedentary comfort. “Commuter Cart” is a battery-run chair on wheels that fits your car’s trunk (goes shopping with you) or becomes home-to-depot transport for commuting dads. Simply lock the chair and leave it at the curb. Invented by a one-time commuter, the 130-lb. midget is designed for shopping (it can be throttled to walk speed), sight-seeing, golfing (an attachment holds your golf bag), or boating (with seat and steering “tiller” removed, “Commuter Cart” snugs into the family boat, takes all the footwork out of onshore errands). A push button puts the cart in reverse. Its three forward speeds—from an ambling three and a half- to a nine-mph “trot”—are controlled by a switch. The quick-recharge battery—it’s concealed beneath a fiber-glass body and packs power enough for 15-20 miles of shopping—has a claimed life-span of five years or more. Standard models cost about $450, include a plug-in recharging unit. Golf-cart versions, with dual electric-drive motors and larger batteries, cost slightly more. Suburbia Today, May 1962 23
