Start Them Young
Continued from page 39 Start for a topiary bird—leader shoot is guided into framework, where it will be sheared to form as it grows out. and today we find it increasingly in American gardens, used to give variety and interest. The best plants to use for topiary are yew and boxwood, ....ice they stay within bounds more easily, but other plants may be used for coarser work. Privet and other deciduous hedge plants may be used, too, but require more frequent clipping to keep them in shape. In England, a wire framework is usually employed, and the lead twig is fed into the framework. As growth fills the frame and projects, it is sheared off to maintain the form, using the frame always as the guide. Instead of a framework, however, you can simply use your eye and hand as you shear to achieve the rm, particularly if the shape is not too elaborate. ON THE WEST COAST in modern Japanese-style gardens a form of topiary is often used, in which the gardener merely improvises on the plant's natural form, keeping certain parts bare to expose interesting branch structure. Usually two trimmings will keep evergreens neat and the lines clean all year, with an occasional vigorous shoot being nipped back between times. Although none of these training programs falls exactly into the category of lazy-man gardening, they are not as time- and labor-consuming as you might imagine, and you will be well repaid for the effort you put in. In embellishing the garden with sheared or espaliered material, you will have a fascinating hobby.
Bringing Up Baby Hints Collected by Mrs. Dan Gerber, Mother of 5 a personality in the making
Bringing Up Baby® Hints Collected by Mrs. Dan Gerber, Mother of 5 a personality in the making At about 3 to 4 months, a baby "comes of age" as a personality and responds more to the world around him. Now baby recognizes you. Eyes light up at the sight of you; ears rejoice at the sound of your voice. Offer a smile and you'll probably get a smile back. Look and you'll see little fingers dare to play, to touch, to reach. Listen and you'll hear new coos and gurgles in his self-styled vocabulary. Now's the time to help baby up the ladder of learning by encouraging his efforts, stimulating his imagination. Then watch that wonderful personality blossom! The growth picture. Your baby grows faster the first year than the next few put together. That's why he needs plenty of protein... the most important "growing tool" in his diet. Gerber Strained Meats, made from selected Armour cuts, are high in quality protein, offer significant amounts of B-vitamins and minerals. Additional benefits: ARMOUR • All 9 varieties are pure meat with just enough broth for a smooth, moist texture. Helping hand dept. "Will too much attention spoil a baby?" asks many a mother. Well, experts today say that, in general, babies whose emotional needs are satisfied at an early age make fewer demands later on. After all, when you cuddle your baby for comfort or croon away his loneliness, you're giving him a sense of security and helping him to develop into a happy, well-adjusted personality. Nutrition notation. Specially prepared baby cereals play an important role in your baby's diet because of the special nutrients they supply. Gerber Cereals are enriched with the iron babies need shortly after birth. (Milk does not provide enough for babies' needs.) In addition they contain important B-vitamins for appetite and growth, calcium for sturdy bones. As for eating enjoyment... flavors are pleasantly bland, the texture ever so nice on the tongue. Menu magic. Nothing quite like Gerber Strained Fruits to make a small-fry menu sing. For they have a natural talent for true-fruit flavors and eye-appealing colors. Have you treated your baby to Gerber Apricots lately? M-mmm, good. Important: Gerber prepares over 100 baby foods—cereals, strained and junior—to meet your baby's nutritional needs.
