Granada Boulevard Isn't State Road; Or, Maybe It Is?
Granada Boulevard is not a state road, but he can't prove it, City Attorney Ted Semple said Tuesday. Paul Fischer, 4916 Granada Blvd., claimed at last week's public hearing on rebuilding Granada that it was a state road and that County funds could be obtained to improve it. The claim caused the City Commission to back off while it was checked out. Semple said he has been assured by both County and State officials that Granada is not an arterial highway. But no one could come up with final proof that Fischer's claim was baseless. Semple confirmed that the State Legislature did at one time pass a special act designating Granada as a State road, but another act was passed subsequently taking Granada out, he said. But no one could find it. Gables streets designated State roads, Semple said, are Bird Road, Maynada Street, Le Jeune Road, Sunset Drive and Red Road. "And no more," Semple emphasized. "Granada is not a State road." But he can't prove it. Fischer's claim proved of little consolation to a group of opponents last week. They said they thought Granada was just fine the way it was and did not want it fixed, regardless of who paid the bill.
People Like It and It's Catchy, But No Soap
By ADELE SITKIN Correspondent Roy Oliver, who composed a poem "It's So Lovely Living in the Gables" and its melody, is waiting for Gableites to get some pride in their city. Four years ago, the president of the local Home Owner's Association told Oliver: "We have such a beautiful city but no patriotic feeling or song to bring us together." So the composer, now teaching voice and keyboard instruments at the Miami Conservatory of Music, wrote the song. He brought it to the group. "They liked it," he said. "I recorded it and offered it to the city commissioners to use as they wish but they haven't done anything about it." The musician feels that Gableites have everything but pride for their city. "I'm trying to build up a feeling of pride through music." The composer, of 422 Alca-zar Ave., is called upon by civic groups and clubs to sing his song at various functions. He has not copyrighted it. "I don't think anyone will steal it." Oliver said, "Everywhere I sing it, people like it. It's very catchy. I am ready to give it free to any group who would turn the profits to charity." Oliver, who sings commercially as well as heading the modern music department of the local music conservatory, is currently writing a song for the Brotherhood Week programs of the Council of Christians and Jews. He is the composer of the 1942 hit song, "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To." The words of his Gables song are as follows: IT'S SO LOVELY LIVING IN THE GABLES It's so lovely living in the Gables, Coral Gables, Florida, Where the sun shines brighter, and Hearts are lighter, and All the folks you meet are friends. It's so lovely living in the Gables, Where flowers grow 'round every door, When you're feeling blue, Just a stroll along the Mile All the folks you meet will be wearing a big smile. Southern hospitality, It's the place you want to be It's so lovely living in the Gables.

"Oh, Frank, I think it's love-ly," said a woman Tuesday afternoon as she sipped champagne at the Lioness' Lair, 345 Palermo Ave. She was one of dozens who dropped in for the opening of the Gables' newest beauty salon, operated by Frank Hesson, until recently a partner in the Serse Salon. Among the guests was Mrs. Alma Bir, realtor through whom Hesson bought the two-story building for $32,500. The decor is in keeping with the name and the custom-made furniture is upholstered in what looks like genuine lion skins. Hesson is a Miami native and lives at 10712 SW 44th St.
