Pop Earned the Bread, But Mom's Name Was Called

By SANDY CALPINI Correspondent As Mrs. Mayhoward Austin McEachern stepped up on the platform to receive the Florida Mother of the Year award at a recent luncheon in Jacksonville, she slipped her husband of 43 years this verse: "He earned the bread And we were fed. Mind was Free To fill their need, For things God knew Just Moms could do." Although the 67-year-old mother had six good reasons (children) for being selected for the honor, Mrs. McEachern (pronounced McCann) felt that her husband Don deserved just as much credit. Mrs. McEachern, sponsored by the deaconists of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Coconut Grove, competed with 16 other moms around the state. "The award came as a complete surprise though," exclaimed the happy mother. "My brother, James A. Austin had been compiling my portfolio for almost a year without my knowledge." At Christmas he had sent her money to have her picture taken, although she didn't get around to it until late last month. He wanted two pictures and she could keep the third. When she asked him why he wanted two pictures, she said he answered, "I have two eyes don't I." The mother of six children and 14 grandchildren scattered all over the world is proud of her children, who all hold one or more degrees and did it by working themselves through college. "My husband was a civil employe and we didn't have lots of money but the children had an instinct for knowledge and learning, and we tried to raise them properly in a religious home." Jeanne Rutherford, the eldest child, received her Ph.D. from Vanderbilt University in psychology. Marguerite Ray has a master's degree in philosophy. The couple's one son, Don Robert, is a senior supervisor and marine engineer for E. I. du Pont in Aiken, S.C. The fourth child, Rosemary, is the wife of a medical missionary in Tanganyika, East Africa, and graduated cum laude from University of Florida. Cecil Young with a master's degree in science is the wife of a medical missionary in East Pakistan. The youngest child, Frances Throne, has a master's degree in psychology from Vanderbilt and she and her husband, Dr. John W. Throne (his parents are Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Throne, 417 Santander Ave.), work with retarded children in Chicago. "All children are my hobby," Mrs. McEachern declared. As a part - time mommy caring for children left with her by neighbors and friends, she hopes to raise enough money to pay her fare to Tanganyika to see her daughter Rosemary. The McEacherns moved from Jacksonville 10 years ago when he retired and settled at 10600 SW 69th Avenue where her husband can garden in their acre yard and where Mrs. McEachern now spends her time "writing scads of thank you notes." She has also published 40 of her poems. Between May 7-11th, the National Mother of the Year will be selected at the Waldorf Astoria in New York but for now this Florida Mother of the Year will continue with her babysitting and helping her husband out in the garden.

Fence for Dixie Hwy. Gets Nod After a 'No'

A protective fence for South Dixie Highway — once denied by the State Road Department — has been approved on appeal. City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. said last week he expects to call for bids by May 1. The fence will run from a point near Brooker Street and terminate at a point 800 feet south on the northeast side of the highway and approximately 600 feet south on the southwest side of Dixie. Breaks will occur at entrances and exits. A top bar or pipe will be installed in the 5 1/2-foot high fence, designed primarily to keep children off the highway. Estimated cost is $2,760 not including landscaping, Robinson said. Landscaping will be located between the sidewalk and buildings. The fence itself will be installed inside the curb. State Road Department first denied the request to build the fence after the city commission had voted for it, but reversed itself after Robinson was directed to appeal.

Mile Firm Closes Door

A store in the 100-block of Miracle Mile quietly and quickly closed last week. It was Miller's Signs on the door told customers where to pick up layaways. The firm, one of a chain operated out of New York, has a sister store in Hialeah. When officials there were called they said they knew nothing of the circumstances of closing here. "You'll have to call New York." Mrs. Mary Miller (no relation to the name of the firm), manager of the Gables operation, was said to be on vacation.
