Shea Heads Gables High Student Government
By LEE SANDLER Correspondent John Shea, 901 Placetas, was elected president of the Coral Gables High Student gov- ernment on May 1. Shea, a junior and one of the school's representatives to Boys Stae next June, defeated another junior, Marc Snyder, 1214 Ferdinand St., 1,648 to 1,007. In another decisive election Barbara Waugh, 3711 SW 61st Ave., beat Ann Rayburn, 935 Andres Ave., for secretary, 1,523 to 1,131. Runoffs were held Wednes- day for vice president and treasurer. Jeff Ellis and Ginger Jochem competed in the runoff for vice president after topping both Charles Shepard and Tom Taft in the preliminary election Ellis won. Jeannie Crawford and Betty Wendt were in the runoff for treasurer. Bob Peterson was eliminated from the treasurer race in the preliminary elec- tion, Crawford won. NEWSPAPER Coral Gables High Lights, the school newspaper, won sec- ond place at the annual Co- lumbia Scholastic Press Asso- ciation judging last month. The bi-monthly newspaper earned 830 points. Twenty more would have brought first place to the High Lights. Major contributors to the award-winning newspaper were co-Editors-in-Chief Linda King and Lee Sandler; Featue Edi- tor Adrienne Katz; Club Edi- tors Joyce Denis and Margaret Morrison; Sports Editor Eric Jonas; and Advertising Man- ager Gretchen Vanderburg. CHORUS Coral Gables High's Concert Chorus won top honors at the annual state contest this year. It was the first time the school's chorus won the Su- perior rating since 1952. The chorus was in competi- tion with 70 other high schools from the state. In solo competition Ruth Tally earned a superior rating while Pam Kelly took excellent. DEBATE Cavalier debaters and speak- ers earned two victories last weekend. On April 26, they de- feated Miami Beach High 55-30 in a debate tournament. On the following Saturday the team went to Edison High and won the Student Congress, once again edging out Miami Beach. Senior Jan Faber was named best speaker at the Edison Student Congress. CHESS Gables High students walk- ed off with first place in the Dade County inter-scholastic chess tournament last week- end. The team score of 231⁄2 was the highest in the three year history of the tournament. It was the first time Coral Ga- bles has won it. High scorer for the Gables team was Carlos Martinez with 5 while four others tied for second with 41⁄2. They were Lloyd Stephen, Arturo Rodrig- uez, Pedro Saavedra, Daniel Weintraube and Don Goodman. German Club has announced the election of new officers. Those who will serve are Bo Spassoff, president; Mark Weiss, vice president; Charlot- te Nagymihalp, secretary; Jeanette Portnoy, treasurer.
Broker Carl Hartley Opens Own Office
Carl Hartley, real estate broker, has his own office now at 2622 Galiano St. Hartley is originally from Trenton, Mo., and for the last four years has been with Keyes Realty where he was a vice president.
Chamber’s All Set For Wednesday Fete
(See Sory and Editorial, Page 4) More than 160 Chamber of Commerce members and their guests have placed reservations for the 36th An- nual Membership Dinner scheduled for next Wednesday, May 9, at the Coral Gables Country Club. Speaker for the evening is H. Roe Bartle, mayor of Kansas City. Mayors from all nearby communities have been invited to attend the meeting, sitting at a specially reserved table. Another such table has been arranged for residents or former residents of Kansas City. Master of ceremonies for the evening will be Warner Daniels. Outgoing Chamber President Hamilton Hayes and Retail Merchant Division Chairman Sam Miller, will be recognized for their accomplishments. The dinner begins at 7:30 p.m. Reservations are being taken at the Chamber office.
