SLOWLY, BUT SURELY the steam roller grinds away, inch by inch, the property of Clarence A. Brandes and his wife. The Brandes are homeowners who object ot the gobbling up of chunks of private property for the widening of LeJeune Rd. Here the Brandes watch in dismay as the roller grinds by them unheedingly.
Land Owners Won't ‘Give’ LeJeune
A majority of property owners along LeJeune Rd. have declined to turn over rights of way for widening of LeJeune Rd., City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr. said Jan. 30. The homeowners object to turning over without compensation small portions of land for turning radii at intersections. Robinson said that the matter will probably have to go to Circuit Court for condemnation procedures, but that the City's role ended with trying to acquire the land for the State Road Department as a cooperative gesture. Pick Up Tab The county, which is paying the $738,000 cost of widening to 60 feet-70 feet including sidewalks-will now have to pick up the tab, Robinson indicated. No existing buildings are to be moved under the widening plan, but several walls, built beyond normal setback lines, will have to be moved back, Robinson said. These include portions of the architecture at both the Miracle Mile and Alhambra Circle intersections. But the arrangements left at least one homeowner unhappy. Mrs. Clarence A. Brandes, 365 Malaga, said that the city had failed to properly protect property owners. We're not going along on the radii," said Mrs. Brandes. The Brandeses have repeatedly asked the City Commission for rezoning of their property to compensate them for the fact that LeJeune has been "converted into a truck route." Built In 1925 Their property, built along LeJeune Rd. back in 1925 before Coral Gables was incorporated, according to Robinson, never had adequate setbacks from the highway and wound up in a depression years later when sidewalks were installed a foot or so higher than the property. The Brandeses purchased the property in 1925 long before LeJeune traffic volume became a serious problem. Mrs. Brandes said last week that she and her husband have tried unsuccessfully for years to have that portion of LeJeune Rd. near San Sabastian residence hall changed in zoning to enable sale. As the property stands, she said, it is unliveable and can't be sold because nobody wants it. "All we want is to duplicate the property elsewhere," Mrs. Brandes said. Their problem was brought before the City Commission by Commissioner Robert Searle recently. Robinson and City Attorney Ted Semple are now studying what relief can be granted. Robinson said Monday that rezoning of the Brandes lot adjoining LeJeune Rd. to commercial was not likely, but that he might recommend that another 40-foot lot the Brandes own adjoining their home could be zoned to enable them to build a duplex on it. But any final recommendation will have to await a conference with Semple, who might have some new ideas on the subject, Robinson said. The city manager said he expected to have his recommendation to the City Commission next week.
But They Can Still Give Out Those Tickets
Coral Gables female parking meter checkers will no longer be classified as police women. In a long debated move, the City Commission Jan. 31 voted unanimously to transfer the four women from the Police Department to the Finance Department. The move, long recommended by City Manager L. W. Robinson Jr., will strip the former policemen of the power of arrest, change their name to "Parking Meter Checker", and limit them to handing out overtime parking tickets only, Robinson said. Other illegal parking violations will be handled by policemen. At the same time, the Commission voted to appropriate $2900 to affect other changes in the Police Department to allow the hiring of "civilian" handicapped persons to handle dispatching.
Guatemala Is Big
Guatemala facing both the Caribbean and the Pacific, has the largest population of any Central American republic, the National Geographic Society says.
Here's What's Going On At Andalusia, LeJeune
What's going on at the Old Youth Center lot? A new shopping center? Another bank? An office building? No - none of these things. Those massive concrete slabs are being moulded at the "Sottile" property for use as drain-age ditch covers in connection with the LeJeune Rd. widening project. The City, which leases the lot from the owner, recently allow-ed Troup Bros. Construction Co. to utilize that portion of the lot in exchange for fill.
WHAT'S IT LIKE TO BE A KING OR QUEEN? On Feb. 13 the Medical Faculty Wives of the University of Miami are going to answer that question. They're having a "Mardi Gras" dinner and dance at 8 p.m. at the Coral Gables Country Club. And they'll select a king, a queen and four Princesses. In the lower right corner is the King's crown. The other King's crown is a reflection in a mirror. Behind the King's crown is the reflection caught in the mirror of the Red Room at the Country Club. Left to right planning the affair are Faculty wives, seated, Mrs. John M. Caldwell, 822 Jeronimo Dr.; Mrs. Franklin J. Evans, 4305 Toledo St. Standing is Mrs. Chauncey Stone Jr., 4480 SW 62nd Ct.
