Bird Walks, Boat Trips To Tell Nature's Secrets
By RAYMOND LANG The action was swift. A grey-tufted male swung a vicious haymaker at his adversary. Another male nattily attired in a blue suit played practical jokes on his neighbors. And a red-haired male dutifully helped his wife feed the children and tuck them into their straw beds. Sound like neighbors of yours? They are! But not the kind you'd chat with over a back fence or borrow sugar from. In [?] manner of speaking, they're the kind of neighbors you usually "have to look up to." The neighbors are birds! Have Personalities Our feathered friends have personalities, or you might call it "birdalities," just like people. That's the opinion of Kenneth Close, a Coral Gables naturalist. Take the birds for instance. The Mockingbird is tough and ready to fight ferociously for his home. KENNETH CLOSE But the Blue Jay is a rascal, a jokester. And the Cardinal is the model husband who helps his wife whenever he can. Close has studied nature most of his life. And he's nailed down tight in his memory observations of what he's seen, such as the habits of birds. "I find the study of nature a fascinating pursuit," said Close, who is looking forward to opening his Feb. 9-April 9 tropical nature introductory course. Peace of Mind "I think there's a peace of mind that comes from the out-of-doors," Close added, "and I've an intellectual curiosity about nature. "It's an endless pursuit. One never learns all there is to know about nature." What Close has learned along with other noted naturalists will be combined in the tropical nature class, which will meet at the University of Miami. Looking forward to the 12th annual session, Close pointed out that the course is tailor-made for Scout leaders, teachers, other professional people and anyone interested in the out-of-doors. He emphasized it's an introductory course and requires no great knowledge of nature. There'll be 15 evening lectures, on each Thursday night from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and eight field trips, one each Sunday afternoon. One of the field trips will be a guided tour, by boat and foot, through the nature-rich Everglades. For further information on the nature course, sponsored by the University and Tropical Audubon Society, call Kenneth Close, 638 Velarde Ave., at HI 6-2894.
Gables Burglary Nets Top Haul
One of the biggest burglaries in Coral Gables history was reported by Coral Gables police Jan. 26—a haul of more than $20,000. The break occurred at the home of Ira W. Weill, 225 San Sabastian, between 8 p.m. and midnight Jan. 25, according to police. Entry into the Weill home was apparently gained through a kitchen door. The entire home had been ransacked. A long list of stolen items included such expensive property as a $6000 mink coat, a $3800 diamond ring, a $3000 mink stole, an $1100 pocket lighter, a $3000 jewelry sales case and thousands more in jewelry and furs. The burglary topped by several thousands another break March 9, 1959, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph A. Garfield, 6510 Granada Blvd. That break netted the burglars a reported $17,000 in jewelry and furs and household items, including a television set. The Garfields were away at the time and the break was discovered by a neighbor. Ransacking and vandalism also accompanied that break.
Biltmore Golf Course Restaurant Burglarized
Approximately $180 was stolen from the restaurant at the Biltmore Golf Course Jan. 23, Coral Gables police reported last week. Burglars entered the restaurant by removing a pane of glass from a patio door. They took the money from a cigar box which had been placed under the cash register.
