Policemen Issue Tickets For Annual Ball

The 24th annual Policemen's Ball will get underway at 9 p.m. tomorrow (Friday) night at the Coral Gables Country Club. The ball, open to the public through a donation, is expected to be the largest one to date, according to Lt. Robert Bell. A 15-piece orchestra, composed of musicians from some of the nation's top bands, will provide dance music. Joe Sodja, guitar soloist with the Fred Waring band, will be one of the featured entertainers. Other acts will include Melino and Hollis, acrobats; Jay Ross, who will do an audience participation balloon act; Nancy Long, a novelty act; and Jeanne Gehm, a baton twirling routine. Proceeds from the event will go towards paying the policemen's insurance program and juvenile recreation program. The Coral Gables Police Benevolent Association will again sponsor the ball.

Merchants Seek Sign Controls

Alarmed by an apparent increase in the use of large signs in the windows of some retail establishments, the Retail Merchants Division of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce has authorized a study to determine the feasibility of tightening local controls of such signs. Albert Friedman, president of the merchants group, said that Gerard Pucci, local attorney, has been retained to frame an ordinance incorporating the desired controls. It is expected that the City Commission will be asked to consider the ordinance when it is ready. "The use of fire-sale tactics in the form of oversize window signs is destructive of the atmosphere which Coral Gables merchants have spent years in fostering, Friedman points out. "We will stop it if we can," he said.

Anti-Castroite's Car Riddled

A Coral Gables man engaged in anti-Castro activities reported having been shot at near a Miami intersection early Sunday morning. According to Gables police, Charles F. Towles, 10901 Old Cutler Rd., had his car riddled by bullets as he passed the NW 17th Ave.-NW 35th St. intersection on his way home shortly before 3 a.m. One bullet penetrated both the rear and front windshields and a second embedded itself in the trunk of his car. Towles was not injured in the shooting. The most efficient converter of grain and other feed is the broiler chick, requiring less than three pounds of feed to produce one pound of grain.

Israel For An Exciting And Adventurous Vacation | Tour Through Archaeological Record Of Man

How would you like to go to Israel on your vacation this year? You can do it you know! Bill Mason of Travel Inc. is now touring Israel to consider accommodations there for you. And Mason already has information about the historic-rich Middle East country he thinks might help you as you wonder where to spend your vacation this year. "One of the most fruitful areas of the world for archaeological projects is Israel, where relics of ancient civilizations are being unearthed wherever a digging operation is in progress—and with this country's rapid rate of growth, the earth is being torn up for roads, power projects, buildings, and other current needs of the land," Mason said. Israel's citizens have taken up amateur archaeology as a hobby. Visitors, too, are often bitten by the bug. Much of the current interest has arisen from the accidental discoveries made when Israel's young men and women were digging trenches to protect strategic positions during their most recent war with the Arabs." At that time, one of the most important strongholds in the Jerusalem sector was the Hill of Rachel. The fighters defending this position extended its excavating trenches, and in the process came across the ruins of a Byzantine church. (Later excavation showed that there were actually two churches on the site, the first one found having been built on the ruins of an even older building.) Despite the fact that the position was under heavy fire for most of every 24-hour period, the Israeli fighters stopped their excavations in that direction after their find and took their trenches elsewhere after marking the location for later scientific excavation. The site of these two churches is now open to sight-seers. On the road from Ashkelon, itself a recently excavated ancient city, to Beersheba and the Red Sea resort of Eilat are the ruins of Avdat. Here, just south of Beersheba, a ridge rises 600 feet directly from the asphalt roadway. From atop the ridge there is a view of vast stretches of the Negev desert, and it was here that a tribe from Byzantine times assembled. In the ridge itself, beneath the city, are dozens of interconnecting caverns which had been used as dwelling places. This site was discovered in the mid-30's by an English army officer, but work on the area was only begun in the last few years. "This site also provides the opportunity for a most unusual coffee break. Bedouin camped at the base of the ridge offer superb coffee to visitors, to be enjoyed while seated on an Arab blanket in a desert tent with camels looking on disinterestedly," Mason explained. "In Jerusalem itself there is a recently begun excavation which has disclosed the burial caves of the ancients of the army, the judiciary and other important figures of the time." In Beth She'arim, about ten miles southeast of Haifa, a city dating from the time of Christ is currently being reconstructed. In its time, this city was a center of Hebraic learning and an important burial site of the scholars of the era. Elaborate underground tombs reminiscent of the Roman catacombs have been located. The area surrounding Beth She'arim is rich is historical evidences. The city itself contains, in addition to the foregoing, the remains of a synagogue, public buildings, dwellings, a glass factory and an olive press. Yes, Israel is truly an interesting country to see. In many areas tourists are permitted to keep as souvenirs pieces of ancient pottery they find while exploring the ruins. Since this land has been lived in for more than 3000 years, it contains an archaeological record of the history of man. Here is Subeita, a true Byzantine Pompeii.

Medical Inc., A Leader In Supplies

The personal touch achieves a leadership all its own. Much of this can be traced to the understanding of each individual problem and a desire to be of help. Medical Inc. has been established to service the sick and handicapped with equipment and supplies for all medical needs. Through the years both Mr. Norman J. Leventhal and Mr. Homer S. Rievman have enjoyed excellent reputations and gained valuable experience in handling the personal problems of the sick, which is also their aim at Medical. Both Mr. Leventhal and Mr. Rievman are very familiar with the many problems which arise with the use and wearing of trusses, colostomy and ileostomy appliances, urinary aids and appliances, etc. They are fully aware of the fact that these are very persona! problems, indeed, and that each and every patient must have the individual aid in the solution of these problems. These appliances cannot be fitted or worn by merely applying any general rule for all patients. This is definitely not in the best interests of the patient and will often affect his well-being. Latest Equipment Medical Inc. is "housed" in a new modern building, completely air-conditioned and heated, with private fitting departments and bathrooms. The store features merchandise of highest quality such as Truform and Camp, Bauer & Black elastic stockings, Everset and Jennings wheel chairs, walkers and commodes. "Proper and correct fitting is very important to the patient," Mr. Leventhal said, "and we will make certain that every support is custom fitted to assure maximum utility." "We will be happy to fit any patient in their home, or in any other convenient location." The list of supplies that may be purchased here includes: surgical supports, back supports, trusses, surgical supplies and sick room aids, bandages, rubber goods, orthopedic equipment colostomy appliances and urological aids.
