Israel For An Exciting And Adventurous Vacation Tour Through Archaeological Record Of Man
How would you like to go to Israel on your vacation this year? You can do it you know! Bill Mason of Travel Inc. is now touring Israel to consider accommodations there for you. And Mason already has information about the historic-rich Middle East country he thinks might help you as you wonder where to spend your vacation this year. "One of the most fruitful areas of the world for archaeological projects is Israel, where relics of ancient civilizations are being unearthed wherever a digging operation is in progress—and with this country's rapid rate of growth, the earth is being torn up for roads, power projects, buildings, and other current needs of the land," Mason said. Israel's citizens have taken up amateur archaeology as a hobby. Visitors, too, are often bitten by the bug. Much of the current interest has arisen from the accidental discoveries made when Israel's young men and women were digging trenches to protect strategic positions during their most recent war with the Arabs." At that time, one of the most important strongholds in the Jerusalem sector was the Hill of Rachel. The fighters defending this position extended its excavating trenches, and in the process came across the ruins of a Byzantine church. (Later excavation showed that there were actually two churches on the site, the first one found having been built on the ruins of an even older building.) Despite the fact that the position was under heavy fire for most of every 24-hour period, the Israeli fighters stopped their excavations in that direction after their find and took their trenches elsewhere after marking the location for later scientific excavation. The site of these two churches is now open to sight-seers. On the road from Ashkelon, itself a recently excavated ancient city, to Beersheba and the Red Sea resort of Eilat are the ruins of Avdat. Here, just south of Beersheba, a ridge rises 600 feet directly from the asphalt roadway. From atop the ridge there is a view of vast stretches of the Negev desert, and it was here that a tribe from Byzantine times assembled. In the ridge itself, beneath the city, are dozens of interconnecting caverns which had been used as dwelling places. This site was discovered in the mid-30's by an English army officer, but work on the area was only begun in the last few years. "This site also provides the opportunity for a most unusual coffee break. Bedouin camped at the base of the ridge offer superb coffee to visitors, to be enjoyed while seated on an Arab blanket in a desert tent with camels looking on disinterestedly," Mason explained. "In Jerusalem itself there is a recently begun excavation which has disclosed the burial caves of the ancients of the army, the judiciary and other important figures of the time." In Beth She'arim, about ten miles southeast of Haifa, a city dating from the time of Christ is currently being reconstructed. In its time, this city was a center of Hebraic learning and an important burial site of the scholars of the era. Elaborate undergroud tombs reminiscent of the Roman catacombs have been located. The area surrounding Beth She'arim is rich is historical evidences. The city itself contains, in addition to the foregoing, the remains of a synagogue, public buildings, dwellings, a glass factory and an olive press. Yes, Israel is truly an interesting country to see. In many areas tourists are permitted to keep as souvenirs pieces of ancient pottery they find while exploring the ruins.

BB Vandals Pepper Windows At Bird - Red
BB-gun vandals had a field day at Red-Bird Shopping Center over the weekend. Plate glass windows in three separate stores at the shopping center, on the northwest corner of Red and Bird Roads, were damaged by BB-gun pellets. Metro police, investigating the case, say they have no leads at this time. But they are sure the vandalism was done by juveniles. Hardest Hit Three Sisters Women's Apparel was the hardest hit. Store supervisor, Leon Rubinstein, said seven windows and a glass door were riddled with BB-shots. Also hit were Belk's Department Store and Butler's Shoe Store. Butler's reported one BB-hole and Belk's several holes. Damage to Three Sisters was reported at $1500 in plate glass. Belk's may have to replace a window as a result of the vandalism. Not First Time "This is not the first time this has happened," Rubinstein said, "and we're not going to let it pass unnoticed." He blamed unruly juveniles for the damage. Rubinstein said this is the third time in four years that such vandalism has occurred.
