South Miami Parking Meters To Stay For A While, Council Decides
By EDWIN KNIGHT A proposal by the South Miami District Chamber of Commerce to do away with parking meters on South Miami's streets during a trial period was tabled by South Miami Council Tuesday night. The Council tabled the request pending the results of a Metro Traffic Division report which would show the city fathers the parking turnover in South Miami. The report from the office of Metro Traffic Division Director George Kunde would show the revenue and use of the City's parking meters. Under the Chamber's proposal, the meters would be ignored. Actually, caps would be placed over the tops of the meters during the trial period. Parking on the city's streets would be for two hour periods, with police giving tickets after this time. The meters in the city's off-street parking lots would not be affected. The report from the Metro Traffic Division is due in two or three weeks. The Merchant's Division hopes the lack of parking meters on the city streets will invite more shoppers to the business area. Each merchant, according to the proposal, will have his employes park in off-street lots. In other business, Council: DENIED the petition of S. R. Rand for the rezoning of some 36 parcels lying between SW 62nd Ave., Sunset Dr., 62nd Pl. and 74th St. from RU-1 and RU-2 to C-1. The area, known as W. A. Hobbs subdivision, is owned by some 19 persons who hired attorney Rand to represent them at the meeting. Although this petition was denied, Council will ask the city's Planning and Zoning Board to investigate the rezoning of this property to a more liberal useage. PASSED on first and second readings an ordinance requiring the city to pay the cost of employe participation in city authorized group, life, hospitalization and medical insurance. PASSED resolutions naming new members to the city's Planning and Zoning Board. Named to two-year terms were Carl Paden, John W. Brau, Thomas T. Foster, Leon Thaler, Albert Corsiglia and Harold E. Yakeley. Named to one-year terms were Jack Stanton, Myron Keys, R. E. Rutledge Jr., James Ferguson and George Kramer. AUTHORIZED permission for mechanical rides, sponsored by merchants, in the Dixie-62nd Ave. shopping center from March 6 to March 12. ACCEPTED the low bid of Fred Wilson Paving Co. for the construction of two tennis courts and a basketball court at Brewer Park, on the Brewer Canal at Miller Road. Wilson's bid was $6661.60, the lowest of three bids for the job. ANNOUNCED that the second meeting on the city's master plan would be held at 8 p.m., Monday, Feb. 13, at South Miami Junior High School. Speaker at that meeting will be Scott Bagby, the author of South Miami's newly acquired master plan. ANNOUNCED PLANS for the removal of the city's auto inspection station to a location at SW 62nd Ave. and 62nd St. during the next month. According to City Manager C. B. Petry, the area will be beautified and cars will have ample distance to wait in line to be inspected.
