THE PULSATING RHYTHM OF CALYPSO will drift across the grounds of St. Philip's Episcopal Church this Saturday during the "Carnival in Rio" fair. Working out their routine are Don Frantz, 4627 SW 10th St., who's playing the bongos. Strumming the guitar is Mike Clough, 817 Alberca St. The fair is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
"I SORTA LIKE THIS ONE BEST", said little David Gathings as he and Christy Black took a sneak preview of the potted plants that will be available at St. Philip's Episcopal Church fair. On fair day, David, 2624 Galiano, will slip into his rip-roaring cowboy outfit, and little Christy, 8301 SW 31st St., will wrap up her tresses in a turban topped by artificial fruit, put on her striped skirt and white blouse, wrap the beads around her neck. Both children will head for the time of their lives when they take part in the costume contest.
'Carnival In Rio' Is Gay Theme For Church Fair
"Carnival in Rio" is the name of the all day Spring Fair members of St. Philip's Episcopal Church will enjoy Saturday, Feb. 11, at the church. Festivities will begin at 10 a.m. and plans have been made for fun for the whole family. There will be booths for gifts, Easter decorations, clothing, books, records, toys, "white elephants," tropical foods, baked goods, clothes and plants. Luncheon will be served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. featuring a menu of Brazilian beef, all for $1. Coffee and doughnuts and a snack bar with hot dogs, cold drinks and snowballs will be available all day. Highlight of the carnival will be a giant auction with John M. Montgomery (mayor of Coral Gables) wielding the gavel at 1:30 p.m. Articles will be on display all morning so that members and guests can inspect them. Items such as antiques, silver, furniture and jewelry will be on the block. Mrs. William Gaither and Mr. John Findeisen are co-chairmen; Mrs. Willard R. Brown is co-ordinator of women's activities and Mrs. William Vanderbilt, promotion. Mrs. L. W. Dowlen heads the auction. There are 28 members of the Women of St. Philip's working under Mrs. Brown, coordinator of women's activities: Miss Maude Whiteleather is in charge of bridge party, and Mr. and Mrs. H. Drewery Kerr, children's activities.
Protestant Minister Will Address Temple
The Rev. George H. Holwager will speak on his trip to the Holy Land at Temple Beth Am, 5950 N. Kendall Dr., South Miami, on Friday, Feb. 10, at 8:15 p.m. Reverend Holwager is pastor of the South Dade Christian Church in Homestead and is a graduate of Butler and Vanderbilt Universities. The topic for his talk will be "Modern Israel As I Saw It." Slides of his trip will also be shown. Howard Gittleson, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Gittleson, will be Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 11 a.m. in the Temple. "How Do We Regard Our Christian Neighbors?" will be the topic of discussion for Mr. David Saklad of the American Jewish Committee. Mr. Saklad will speak at the Adult Institute in the Temple Beth Am auditorium at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 12. Mr. Saklad will attempt to analyze the prejudicial images of Gentiles which exists among Jews. Temple Beth Am will present Mr. Nehemiah Mark, a well known sculptor on Jewish subjects, at the Religious School on both Saturday and Sunday morning, Feb. 11 and 12 respectively. Mr. Mark, whose work is known throughout the world, works primarily on Biblical themes and tells the story behind his work as he displays his artistry.
Robert Maizel Is Saturday Bar Mitzvah
Robert Mark Maizel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Macklen Maizel, 5811 SW 13th St., will be Bar Mitzvah at 9 a.m. Saturday at Temple Zion, 5720 SW 17th St. Rabbi Alfred Waxman will officiate at the ceremonies. Robert's parents will be hosts to the Kiddush following. Robert is a seventh grade student at West Miami Junior High School. Arriving from New York for the Bar Mitzvah will be Mr. and Mrs. Louis Silverman of Far Rockaway, Long Island, and Mr. and Mrs. Hyman Ziman and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Gray, all of Brooklyn.
Unitarian Speaker
Arthur Spiegel of the Anti Defamation League will be guest speaker at the Adult Forum of the First Unitarian Church, 46 SW 29th Road, on Sunday, Feb. 12, 10 a.m. His subject will be "The Gentile People of Prejudice."
Public Invited To Book Review
A review of Eleanor Roosevelt's books will highlight the monthly meeting of the Women's Association of the First Presbyterian Church of Coral Gables at 10 a.m., Feb. 15. The public is invited to hear Mrs. William T. Hilles review the work of the well-known wife of the former president of the United States. Donation is $1. Mrs. Robert C. Young, chairman of the ways and means committee, is in charge of the program. The church is located at 127 Alhambra Pl.
Seymour Rosen Will Be Bar Mitzvah Saturday
"Commitments of the American Jew" will be the message by Rabbi Morris A. Skop, spiritual leader of Temple Judea, on Friday, Feb. 10, at 8:15 p.m. The Candle Blessing will be invoked by Mr. and Mrs. George Rosen and family in honor of the Bar Mitzvah of their son, Seymour. On Saturday, Feb. 11 at 10:30 a.m., Rabbi Skop and Cantor Herman K. Gottlieb will conduct the Bar Mitzvah of Seymour Rosen, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Rosen, during the Torah Service. His parents will be hosts at the Kiddush-Sanctification immediately following the service in honor of the occasion.
VA Honors Employes For 20-Years Service
Three employes of the Miami Veterans Administration Office, 984 West Flagler St., are receiving congratulations from their fellow-employees for completing 20 years of service. In an informal employee meeting, they were presented their 20 year service pins by C. W. Boggs, officer in charge of the Miami office. The employes are Henry L. Dries, 318 Candia, Coral Gables; Miss Maurya Graham, 3773 SW 27th Ter., and George H. Hanskat, 3420 SW 84th Ave. Dries and Miss Graham are in the Counseling Unit and Hanskat is a contact representative.
