Service Station For LeJeune Road Is The Loser
The proposal to construct a service station on LeJeune Rd. ran out of gas Tuesday when the Coral Gables City Commission tied 2-2 on final reading of an ordinance originally approved Dec. 13. Four votes would have been necessary to override the Zoning Board which had gone against the proposal of Orange State Oil Co (Cities Service) to construct a station on the east side of LeJeune between Sevilla and Palermo. Death of the proposal was sounded at the Jan. 17 meeting of the City Commission when Commisisoner Joe Murphy moved to rescind the ordinance passed on a 4-0 vote. He received support from Commissioner James Hess. That move failed, however, when Mayor John M. Montgomery and Commissioners Robert Searle and Frank Kerdyk all abstained. Kerdyk has abstained on all votes because of conflicting interests involving reversionary rights. The proposal, aimed at removing gas stations from Ponce de Leon Blvd. to some other area, met with vehement reaction from neighboring residents, members of the Temple Judea congregation, Deerborne School and City National Bank. Good Loser Orange State official Raleigh W. VanBrunt was a good natured loser Tuesday. "It is our desire to continue to cooperate with the city in its removing of stations from Ponce de Leon Blvd., if we can do so," said VanBrunt. He pointed out that his firm had spent a great deal of work and money in its efforts to move from Ponce to the LeJeune Rd. site. VanBrunt indicated that his firm would seek another location which he said he hoped would receive "favorable action next time."
