Club Will Present Gable's Biggest Flower Show

This is the first of a series of four profiles of members of the Coral Gables Garden Club who are in charge of the elaborate flower show the club will present this year in the Coral Gables Masonic Temple, 41 Valencia, the last week in February. Today's subject is Mrs. George R. Simmons, 751 Davis Rd., who had a full color picture in the 1961 Florida Federation of Garden Clubs Calendar. A color picture in this annual volume is by invitation only. Mrs. Simmons is not only a flower arranger, but she designed many of her own containers and vases and had them made by a Carolina craftsman. The containers are made of wood, cooper lined. She lectured and was known for her talent in gardening in North Carolina before she moved to Coral Gables. Mrs. Simons originated and developed a visual school of flower arrangement in Winston-Salem. She called it "The Little Art Gallery." It was designed so that the flower arrangements could be displayed in the proper setting. The Little Gallery had niches, movable partitions and movable shelves so that any arrangement could be framed to scale for display. One of her main rules is balance. She says plant material should reach above the container and it must be in good balance. "One can have good balance without good design," she says, "but one cannot achieve good design without proper balance." Always a great admirer of the late Dr. Liberty Hyde Bailey, Mrs. Simmons feels as he did that plant forms can express art and that a beautiful arrangement can captivate and inspire in the same way that a beautiful painting does. Mrs. Simmons won many awards and top honors in North Carolina and Virginia before moving to Florida. She continues to hold her place on that level here. Besides her full color arrangement in the 1961 Florida Federation of Garden Clubs Calendar she also had one published in the 1960 calendar, and one of

small business writes . . . . We say, "Thank You Mr. Kirtley"

Your Greatest Classified Bargain — THE GUIDE small business writes . . . . D. D. Kirtley KIRT'S PIPE SHOP Quality Smokers' Requisites 2413 GALIANO STREET CORAL GABLES, FLORIDA HIghland 8-4916 February 2, 1961 Mr. William von Maurer, Editor 308 Aragon Coral Gables, Florida Dear Mr. von Maurer: Having just closed my books for the month of January, I was greatly pleased with the fantastic increase over the previous January. As a small business I have a very limited advertising budget and therefore have tried various publications to ascertain which afforded me the most for each advertising dollar spent. I can truthfully say that "The Times" has met this requirement. It may be of interest to you to know that your staff has been most helpful and show a definite interest in all copy regardless of the size. Also the fact that you accept small insertions, allows me to keep my name before the most select group of readers in Dade County. "The Times" carried my "opening announcement" approximately eighteen months ago and today "Kirt's Pipe Shop" is firmly established, as "The Smokers' Headquarters" for Dade County. Thanking you, I remain Sincerely, D. D. Kirtley D. D. Kirtley P.S. If my above experiences and the use of this letter will help you or other small business men you are welcome to use it as you see fit. We say, "Thank You Mr. Kirtley"
