News Of The PTA It's A Valentine At Schools For Founder's Day Celebrations

By EUNICE TALL The founding of the Parent Teacher Associations is celebrated among the school PTAs in February. The Founder's Day celebration at Coral Way Elementary School will be Tuesday at 2:45 p.m. in the school cafetorium. Twenty past presidents will be present. Former Principal Mrs. Lorraine Byrnes will also attend. The theme for the meeting is "Take Time for Counting Our Blessings". Guest speaker Mrs. Dorothy Angel, devotional chairman for Dade County and State PTA Councils, will expand on this theme. Kenwood Elementary Parents and children of Kenwood Elementary School will have a Founder's Day birthday party with a Valentine theme Tuesday, Valentine's Day, at 8 p.m., in the school cafetorium. Those attending the party will participate in games, skits, relays and singing. A kitchen orchestra will be organized to add more gaiety. A short history of the school's PTA will be presented by Mrs. Paul Venk, historian. Refreshments will be served. Coral Terrace Elementary Founder's Day celebration at Coral Terrace Elementary School will be Tuesday, 7:45 p.m., in the school cafetorium. A Valentine theme will be carried throughout the meeting. Fourth grade students will introduce their parents as "their Valentines". The fifth grade students will participate in a short play showing the founding of the PTA and then follow its history throughout the years. Mrs. Anita Taylor, teacher, will direct the play. Refreshments will be served. * * * A representative from Metro will talk to the students at Coral Terrace Elementary School about the importance of bicycle safety Wednesday at the school. A machine for testing the safety of bicycles will be at the school Thursday. Students will be urged to take advantage of the check-up. The services of the testing device are being offered through the PTA. Banyan Elementary School The Founder's Day meeting at Banyan Elementary School will be Tuesday evening at 8 in the school cafetorium. Mrs. Guy Perry, member of the Dade County PTA Council, will speak to the membership on "What the Free Will Offering at Founder's Day Is Used For." Two former presidents of the PTA, Mr. Bill Hunt, 1958 to 1959, and Mr. Bill McGee, 1959 to 1960, will be present. Refreshments will be served. * * * Tonight at 7:30 on the school playground, students in grades three through six will participate in a physical education demonstration. The demonstration is to show the procedure followed in elementary school pertaining to physical education. Approximately 600 students will participate in the demonstration. Square dancing, group and team games will be shown. The performance is under the direction of Mr. Herbert Holmberg, physical education teacher. Tropical Elementary School A physical education demonstration will be held at Tropical Elementary School Tuesday at 7 p.m. on the school playground. Students in grades three through six will participate in tumbling exercises, dancing and other activities learned this year. Miss Joan NeSmith and Mr. Edwin Borkowski, physical education teachers, will direct the performance. David Fairchild Elementary Mrs. James Billings, member of the Guild of the Museum of Science and Natural History, will be the guest speaker at 7:30 tonight at the PTA meeting of David Fairchild Elementary School. Mrs. Billings will speak about the museum and its facilities and activities for children in the community. A question and answer period will conclude the meeting. Palmetto Elementary "Transition Between Elementary and Junior High School" will be discussed by a panel Tuesday evening at 7:45 at the PTA meeting of Palmetto Elementary School. Members of the panel will be Dr. Ben Sheppard, juvenile judge; Mr. William Ledwell, assistant principal for curriculum at Palmetto High School; Mr. Walter Wilson, marriage counselor; and two teenagers from Palmetto Junior High School. Moderator will be a teacher from Palmetto Elementary School. Two booklets, "Growing Pains" and "All About Teenager", will be distributed to the membership. The flag salute will be given by Cub Scout Pack 215. Merrick Demonstration Elementary Merrick Demonstration Elementary School will have a PTA meeting Tuesday at 8 p.m. in the school cafetorium. Girl Scout Troop 520 will present a skit entitled "Parents With a Purpose". Mrs. Dorothy Halvorsen, Girl Scout troop leader, is the director of the skit. Mrs. McKev Grinnell, program chairman, is in charge of the program. All past PTA presidents will be honored at this meeting.

U. S. History Sets Theme For Gables DAR

February has been declared American History Month, according to proclamations issued by the President of the United States and Mayor John M. Montgomery of Coral Gables. In observance, members of the Coral Gables Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, will devote their February general meeting to American history. Mrs. Herschel Smith, 1259 Alhambra, a past regent of Mayimi chapter and state corresponding secretary, will speak on "Our American Heritage." Also on the program will be Mrs. Charles Parson, historian of the Coral Gables Chapter, who will deliver a talk on the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and Mrs. Garlund McNutt, chapter members, who will talk on National Defense. Hostesses for the meeting are Mrs. Harry Link Jr., Mrs. Wyatt Alexander, Mrs. Herbert O. Vance, Mrs. Robert F. Florence, Mrs. Fred Connell and Mrs. Jack Garris.
