Gables Scholar Combines College And High School

STANDOUT AMONG STUDENTS is Bill Zame. The youth, stepping out from a group of students at Coral Gables High School, has a long list of scholastic honors. And when he isn't absorbing knowledge in his tenth grade classes at the high school, he's grasping the intricacies of advanced math in special courses at the University of Miami. By LESLIE GROSS Bill Zame, 14-year-old whiz from Gables High is currently combining high school and college in his daily curriculum. Bill, a senior, has a long list of credentials to recommend him to this latest distinction. As a freshman, or ninth grader, he attended Summer Math Camp for high school students, a six-week program at Florida State University which drew 40 participants from across the nation. As a sophomore, Bill received the chemistry medal for the highest score in the school on the annual standardized examinat[TEXT LOST]. The following summer, he returned to F.S.U., this time to take part in the Summer Science Camp, a two-week program designed to give scientifically apt students a better picture of their possible career choices. Worked At Lab As a junior, Bill worked at the University of Miami Marine Laboratory, placed high in the school on the Future Engineers of America exam, and topped his scholastic achievement with a score of 105 out of a possible 150 on the National Math Exam, the score earning him first place among Florida high school math students. During this past summer, Bill studied math on a scholarship to Notre Dame's summer program. To add to an academic record that leaves little to be desired, he is now enrolled in a physics course and two advanced math courses at the University of Miami. Bill attends Gables High half a day, and then commutes to the UM for his regular college courses. Zame is outstanding among a number of Gables students involved in advanced studies in all fields. Such programs for students with unusually high aptitudes have been increasing in impetus for the past few years. Bill rounds out his activities by membership in several science clubs and honor societies, and by diversions such as chess and bridge. When asked how he first became interested in math, Zame related that his ninth grade algebra teacher, who prompted him to apply to the F.S.U. Math Camp, had spurred him on. "My experience at the camp showed me I had an aptitude for math and encouraged me to pursue mathematics on my own," he said. Bill hopes to be able to attend the California Institute of Technology, where his brother, Alan, is currently enrolled. Following college, he intends to go into some facet of mathematics as a career.
