UM's first week marred by crime
Several cases of larceny, a dog bite, and a football injury marked the beginning of the school year at the University of Miami last week. Coral Gables police were kept busy over the weekend with calls from the campus, and complaints ranged from CB radio thefts to dormitory room break-ins to personal injuries. Thursday, Aug. 26 — James V. Arminio, 20, was playing tag football on campus when he collided with another player. The blow knocked the student unconscious, and caused him to go into convulsions. Arminio was treated at Doctors Hospital and later released. The same day, Jeffery N. Kenney, 18, complained that when he went to get into his car at UM lot #308 he discovered the lock had been pried from the driver's-side door and his 23 channel CB radio had been stolen. Kenney told police the unit is worth $96. Friday, Aug. 27, at 10:45 a.m., Robin I. Matusow, 16, who lives at 5820 SW 12th St., was walking on campus when she noticed that two dachshunds chained outside the Merrick Building at 5202 University Dr. had become entangled. She stopped to help the struggling dogs only to be bitten by one of them. The teenager, who was treated at the UM Health Center, told police that another girl, Barbara Foulke, at 9120 SW 77th Ave., had been bitten by the same dogs earlier. The campus Health Center was the scene of another mishap Friday. Just after noon, pharmacist Jack E. Massey complained to police that when he returned after lunch, he noticed $120 missing from the cash register. Although a safe containing another $300 as well as narcotics was open, the goods were still there. Massey told officers the thief apparently got the cash by pressing the "No Sale" key on the register. The front door, he said, must not have been securely locked. Rise Strome, 20, a student living at Eaton Hall dormitory, called police Saturday, Aug. 28, to report that she left her wallet on the counter in the dorm lobby, and found it missing when she returned minutes later. Besides $130 in cash, the coed told officers her wallet contained her driver's license, auto registration and various personal papers. Two UM roommates who stayed out until the wee morning hours Sunday, Aug. 29, returned to their dorm room at 1231 Dickinson Dr., and found that some $379 worth of goods had been stolen. Peter G. Kutsegeras, 18, and Richard M. Obren also 18, told police they neglected to lock their door when they left. They reported missing two calculators and a 23-channel CB radio.
