Movie viewers can save cash with proper timing
See related story, Page 54 By ERICA MEYER Staff Writer Remember when you could see a first run movie for less than $3? Well, you still can — if your timing is right. Most Coral Gables and South Dade theaters offer discount prices for the first matinee each day. The deals vary, but the substance is the same: early birds can obtain $3 tickets for between $1.25 and $2.50. And you can get under $3 tickets if your age is right. People under 14 and over 65 are offered discounts at certain times on certain days, also. One local theater, the Twin Gables (SW 33rd Avenue and Coral Way) offers an entire children's program each Wednesday at 10 a.m. The two-hour program includes cartoons, games, prizes and a G-rated flick — all for 50 cents a customer. Some of the discounts are established by various independent theaters and others are established by the major theater chains: Wometco, Florida State and General Cinema Corporation. Wometco (Miracle, Dadeland Twin, Parkway, Sunset) offers special matinee prices in the theaters where they have matinees. The Parkway and Sunset only have evening shows. Wometco doesn't offer a senior citizens' discount. General Cinema (Riviera I and II, Westchester I and II, Cutler Ridge I and II) offers a set reduction for all tickets sold before 2:30 p.m. The special price, except during runs of "road show block buster films, is $1.50.
