whatever happened to ... Schenley Park's street lighting?
On Feb. 5, 1975, The Times/Guide reported that Philip Carlisi, 6275 SW 34th Ct., was working with neighbors to get lights installed in the Schenley Park area west of Coral Gables. Carlisi had spent his evenings visiting the more than 300 homes in the area, bounded by Red Road on the east, SW 63rd Aveune on the west, the Coral Gables Waterway on the south, and SW 32nd Street on the north, asking residents to sign a petition which would lead to the establishment of a special taxing district for street lights. Now, after four years of work, Carlisi and his neighbors will have their wish. Florida Power and Light has recently begun measurements for poles and by October Schenley Park should have lights. "It's been a hard fight," Carlisi said, "but a lot of the neighbors appreciate the lights and that gives me great satisfaction. Southwest 32nd Street is the only street not included because a few of the people there had a hearing to convince authorities that the majority on that street didn't want the lights. "There's been a little opposition we had to overcome, but it's absolutely been worth it. The lights will help minimize nighttime crime," Carlisi said.
