Water rate hike hearing set
For the second time in two months, General Waterworks' application for an increase in water and sewer rates will be considered at a public hearing. Revenue for the utility — which serves large areas in Coral Gables and South Miami — is $5.6 million at existing rates. The request, if granted, could amount to a 50 per cent increase in homeowners' water and sewer bills. Thursday, Sept, 2, at 10 a.m., the Dade County Water and Sewer Board will hold a public hearing at South Miami City Hall to further consider the utility's application. The Board held a public hearing July 14, and heard customer views regarding General Waterworks' service. A number of those customers, particularly in the South Miami area, complained of poor water pressure and quality. After hearing homeowners' complaints at the July 14 hearing, the Board heard the utility's plea to allow the $2.9 million rate increase (or at least $1 million on an interim basis) until the full case could be considered. The Board's staff recommended at that time to grant General Waterworks a $464,000 rate increase (about eight per cent), which the Board ultimately approved. The main purpose of the Sept. 2 hearing is for the Board to hear follow-up reports regarding quality of service complaints made by customers at the July hearing and to consider final action on the utility's petition for $2.9 million permanent rate hike. Those who are interested in the possible rate increase, or who want to hear results of customer complaints made in July, should attend the meeting. The rate filing is available for examination at the General Waterworks' office at 1826 Ponce de Leon Blvd., Coral Gables, and the Water and the Sewer Board office at 2501 Coral Way.
