Monk's Inn ethnic delight

MONK'S INN, 3181 Coral Way, 444-8319. French country cooking, with cheese dishes as specialties. Price range: $3.50 to $9.95. Rustic, monastery decor. Valet parking. Serving until midnight daily. All major credit cards accepted. Brown-robed monks walk softly between stone-walled corridors, offer a friendly smile and a French-accented greeting. Stacks of crusty rolls, huge slabs of cheese and bowls of apples and cream cheese are crowded together on a long wooden sideboard. A monk pores carefully over a pile of books spread upon a wooden table. But he's not copying manuscripts and the stone building at 3181 Coral Way is not a monastary, though it looks like one. It's the Monk's Inn, a restaurant offering old-world charm and French cooking. Much of the fare is typical French: veal, poultry and beef, garnished with rich sauces. But Monk's Inn specializes in country French cooking, so the diner can also choose from such unusual dishes at Montbelard Garni ($5.20), a combination of French pork and beef sausage lightly smoked, or Veal Marengo ($6.20), a stew with veal, tomatoes, oinion, potatoes, carrots and special seasonings. Boeuf Gros Sel at $6.000 is a savory casserole of shortribs, cabbage, carrots, turnips and potatoes served in broth with horseradish and coarse salt. More standard French fare that isn't-so-standard in South Dade includes bouillabaisse ($8.75), a seafood chowder with saffron seasoning and half Florida lobster, and Steak Tartare ($6.75), a freshly ground raw filet and spices. — CLAIRE ORTALDA
