More parking doesn't soothe postal customers
By ELIZABETH OWEN Staff Writer Thanks to a task force of the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce, the parking lot to the rear of the Post Office, with an entrance on Valencia, is now open to the public during peak weekday hours — from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Herbert S. Saffir, who heads the task force, determined that parking was the major problem at the Coral Gables Branch postal facility during the middle of the day. The lot — used by mail carriers — is all but vacant when carriers are out on their routes. But when they return in mid-afternoon the lot must be cleared. Apparently, however, word about the added parking space has not filtered down to many Post Office customers. None of the people polled by The Times-Guide as they stood in line Tuesday, Aug. 31, were aware of the change. "They certainly need more parking," said Mrs. Maude Arnett, a South Dade resident. "I don't come here very often, and I try never to come during rush hour because of the parking situation. It's bad, especially for old ladies like me." Pelay Mazorra, who lives on SW 39th Avenue, said he generally parks on the street by a meter. "The new space is better, of course," he said. "It will save money and time — which is important because most people are here for just a few minutes." Gloria Hevia, who worked at Coral Gables Optical on LeJeune Road, comes to the Post Office regularly. "I didn't even know about it and I come every day," she said. "I usually walk because of the limited parking space, but when I do drive, I have a terrible time finding a spot." gables news The Post Office's major handicap is not the parking situation, according to Nanette Chumbley, who lives at 520 Alhambra Cir. "I never have trouble finding a space... I usually park in the front lot," she said. "The trouble is inside the Post Office." "Today is a breeze. Usually, the lines goes all the way back to the door. The people at the counter are slow and they tend to chat with the customers. People don't come here for a social engagement," she said. Richard Chimelis said he makes a point of avoiding the Post Office during busy hours. "I just come here certain hours, but during lunch hour, forget it," said Chimelis, who lives at 154 Almeria. "That rear lot should be open to the public all the time." A Coral Gables Federal Bank employe, Lorraine Ludovici, said she is usually able to find a space in the front parking lot. "I can find a space, but then I have to wait an average of 20 to 25 minutes in line," she said. Paul Melius, who works at the University of Miami, said that even if space is available in the front lot, the one-way streets surrounding the Post Office make access to it almost impossible. Postal clerk R. Dubler said that circulars telling of the additional parking space were inserted in customers' boxes last week.
