ELECT "TY" DURHAM METRO COUNTY COMMISSION, DISTRICT 8
TYRONE VERNON DURHAM CANDIDATE: METRO COUNTY COMMISSION, DISTRICT 8 Tyrone "Ty" Durham, candidate for the Metro County Commission seat for District 8, is a native Floridian. Born in Jacksonville in 1939, Durham moved to Miami with his family in 1948 and has spent the last 28 years here. He attended Ponce de Leon Jr. High School and Coral Gables Senior High School before entering the United States Air Force, where he received an honorable discharge after suffering a collapsed lung. Durham bought and established his own electronics business and has been President of Howard Television, Inc. for 15 years in Dade County. He has always maintained an active interest in the electronics industry, attending numerous training programs and seminars, and he is a founder of the Florida Electronics Service Association (FESA). The Association was established to improve the reputation of the electronics business in Florida and provide an outlet for consumer protection. Durham has served as President and Vice President of FESA and has appeared on several local radio and television programs in support of this organization. Currently, he is on the FESA State Board of Directors and was recently appointed by Governor Askew, to a four year position on the Advisory Council of the Bureau of Electronic Repair. Tyrone "Ty" Durham has also been a member of the Dadeland Lions Club for 12 years, serving the community in every office of the Club. He is presently on the Board of Directors. Durham lives in South Miami with his wife Barbara, 11 year old daughter, Janice, and 14 year old son, Michael. Barbara is active in the Children's Home Society, and both she and Janice are excellent horsewomen. Durham is a private pilot and enjoys flying his airplane for pleasure as well as business. The Durhams belong to the South Miami Church of Christ. "Ty" Durham has entered the campaign for County Commissioner in order to make the Commissioners more responsible to all county citizens. He feels that the present Commission is more concerned with special interest groups, and he would like to see county government brought closer to the people it represents. Durham is an advocate of stricter prosecution of fraudulent insurance practices, a more realistic Rapid Transit system to serve all of Dade County, removal of adult book stores from residential areas, and legislation to recall County Commissioners at district levels.
