Sunset church offers quilting classes

Registration is now being held for fall quilting classes at Sunset Congregational Church, 9025 Sunset Dr. There will be a beginning class covering basic techniques, pattern drafting, use of a frame, history and background, etc., on Monday afternoons from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. The cost of the five-week course, for which some materials will be provided, is $20. An advanced quilting class will be held Wednesday afternoons at the same time, for seven weeks. Cost is $25. For information or to register, call Irene McLaren at 446-6626, or write her in care of the church. An evening class will be offered if there is significant interest.

B'nai B'rith

Sholom Lodge #1024 will hold its first meeting of the year Tuesday, Sept. 14, at the Israelite Center Temple, 3175 SW 25th St., at 8 p.m. Rabbi Solomon Waldenberg will speak on "The Coming Holy Days," and the B'nai Sholom Singers will sing. A refreshment hour will follow.

War vets

West Miami Auxiliary #223, Jewish War Veterans — which is made up of members from the southwest area — will have its first meeting of the fall season Thursday, Sept. 2, at 8 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Fred Sandler, 2720 SW 2nd Ave. Special guest speaker will be a recent emigrant from Russian-occupied Lativa, Mrs. Riva Kapilove. Politics

Howard Drive Elementary School PTA has invited all the candidates for the Dade County School Board to a forum Wednesday, Sept. 1, at 7:30 p.m., in the school cafetorium, 7750 SW 136th St. The evening will consist of questions and answers, and citizens will have a chance to meet candidates in the Sept. 7 primary.

Fern Society

The International Tropical Fern Society will meet Thursday, Sept. 2, at 8 p.m., at Merrick Community School, 30 Zamora Ave., Coral Gables. Tim Anderson, horticulturist and landscape architect, will speak on the "The Footed Ferns," and identification and display tables will be set up. A raffle and refreshments will be offered at break time.

Gables Knights

The Knights of Columbus, Coral Gables Council No. 3274, meet every Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the lodge, 270 Catalonia Ave.

Volunteers

are needed from the Coral Gables and South Dade area to help with the Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 5 and 6. Volunteers will answer phones, take pledges, type and deliver messages and perform all other workers du ing the telethon. Community service groups are weicome. Decoupage

Decoupage, a new course, will be offered at Redland Community School, 16001 SW 248th St., beginning Wednesday, Sept. 1. Instructor is Jackie Sikorski, certified in art by the state of Florida. The fee is $10 for eight weekly sessions. To enroll, or for more information, call the school at 247-6112 between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, or between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday.

People's band

The Department of Continuing Education at Miami-Dade Community College South is forming a community concert band. This band is open to all persons who enjoy playing music. No audition is necessary. Rehearsals will be on Wednesday evenings, beginning Sept. 15 to Nov. 24, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in room 2105 at the South Campus. Registration is open now at a cost of $2 per person.
