Biltmore course celebrates 50 years
The Biltmore public golf course in Coral Gables has reached its 50th birthday. The 18-hole layout opened in 1926 as part of the facilities of the Miami-Biltmore Hotel. Measuring 6,563 yards from the championship tees, and rated a par 71, the course is neither a monster nor a pushover. In the 30s it was the scene of many championship tournaments and Jones, Sarazen, Hagen and Ouiment, to name a few, played the course. The biggest tournament of the day was the Biltmore Open, with a $10,000 purse. One of the biggest annual events now is the Orange Bowl International Junior Golf Championship. Don Hart, director of the Coral Gables Parks and Recreation Department, says that letters from tourists indicate the Biltmore is considered by many to be the finest public course in the country. Howard Dietz, of 90 Edgewater Dr., an annual Biltmore member, says he has been attacking golf balls on hundreds of courses since 1918 and his all time favorite is the Biltmore. The staff at the Biltmore is headed by promanager Tony Mantinan, and includes cashiers H. Drew Upright, Walter Cady and George Dodaro. Bill Kuykendall is in charge of electric carts, Joe Whalen, Charles Kilpatrick and Howard Blumquist are starters, Jim Woods is ranger, Lesley K. Molbert is teaching pro and Brian Sullivan and Charles Bulus are in charge of the driving range.
