Candidates for Dade's Metro Commission

Baggett Berger Holland Phillips District Seven Baggett Jimmy E. Baggett, 49, a retired Metro police supervisor, is a contender for Metro Commission in District 7. A resident of Dade County for 40 years, Baggett served on the Metro police force for 20 years. Baggett attended Dade County Junior College and Walsh School of Business Administration. A U.S. Army veteran, Baggett also served in the U.S. Maritime Service. An active member and past president of the Dade County Police Benevolent Association, Baggett also belongs to the Coconut Grove Masonic Lodge, Tamiami Kiwanis Club and Disabled American Veterans. The father of seven children, Baggett lives in Southwest Miami with his wife Miryam. Berger Marty Berger, 39, owner of a research service company, is running for Metro Commissioner in District 7. The 19-year Dade County resident worked for the City of Miami Finance Department for ten years. He was also employed by Allstate Insurance company as a special investigator. Berger is a member of the Coral Gables Optimists Club and the Knights of Pythias. He has been active in the South Miami Chamber of Commerce and the South Miami Jaycees. He and his wife, Donna, and their children, Phyllis and Alan, reside at 8910 Miller Drive. Holland A Coral Gables Patrolman, Tom Holland, 38, is a candidate for Metro Commission District 7. The 12-year Dade County resident owns and operates a trucking firm with his two brothers. He was a court reporter in Philadelphia from 1964 to 1968. Holland is past president of the Police Benevolent Association and a former member of the Executive Committee of the Fraternal Order of Police. He and his wife Patricia, who is a student at Miami-Dade Community College, live in South Dade with their two children. Phillips Metro Commissioner Beverly "Bev" Phillips, 48, a Dade County resident for 20 years, is seeking re-election to District 7. A political science graduate of Northwestern University, Mrs. Phillips also did graduate work in public administration at the University of Chicago. She is a founding member and director of the Council for the Continuing Education of Women, a Community Health Services Foundation member, and chairman of the Transportation Advisory Committee. In addition, she is past president of the League of Women Voters of Metropolitan Dade County. The South Miami has two children, Jeffrey and Jennifer.

District Eight

Durham Tyrone "Ty" Durham, 37, owner and president of a television service company, is seeking the Metro Commission seat for District 8. The native Floridian is a founder, past president and State Board member of Florida Electronics Service Association. He has been an active member of the Dadeland Lions Club, having served in every office in that organization. Prior to establishing his own business in South Florida, he served in the U.S. Air Force. Hood Shirley Hood, 35, an active citizen of Dade County for 11 years, is a candidate for Metro Commission, District 8. Mrs. Hood, an associate with a realty company, is active in many civic and religious organizations, including Dade County Associations of the Unincorporated Area and Colonial Drive Citizens Association. Mrs. Hood and her husband, Ronald live with their five children in the Colonial Drive area of South Dade. Oesterle Metropolitan Dade County Vice Mayor Clara Oesterle, 51, is campaigning for re-election to the Metro Commission, District 8. A 29-year resident of Dade County, Mrs. Oesterle received her nursing degree from the St. Thomas Hospital School of Nursing in Nashville. Mrs. Oesterle and her husband, Ralph, live in South Dade and are the parents of five children. Palladeno Don Palladeno, 41, president of both a credit clearing service and an employment agency, is a candidate for Metro Commission District 8. He has been active in many area Chambers of Commerce. Palladeno has been a resident of Dade County since 1953. Quina Ken Quina, 44, a consulting engineer and long-time Dade County resident, is a candidate for Metro Commissioner, District 8. A graduate of Miami Senior High School and Georgia Tech, Quina is president of the Florida Chapter of The American Society of Sanitary Engineering. Wicks Larry Wicks, 56, a professor of geology at Miami-Dade Community College, is a candidate for Metro Commission District 8. A graduate of University of Michigan, Wicks has also attended Colorado School of Mines, Wayne State University, and Williams College. He has worked as an oil company geologist, a market analyst and a consultant besides teaching at the college-level. He and his wife Phyllis have six sons. Weitzel Sara Weitzel, 40, a Dade County resident for 17 years, is a candidate for County Commission, District 8. An active member of the Dade County League of Women Voters for 14 years, she has served as Voter Service Chairman, Communications Vice President, and President in that organization. She has also been a member of the Budget Committees for the Florida and National League of Women Voters. Mrs. Weitzel lives with her husband and three children in the Kendall area. Durham Hood Wicks Weitzel Quina Palladeno Oesterle
