Car insurance drop pledged
From Page 48 ness. Why not let the state sell the minimum required liability to the licensed driver at a reasonable rate, include a $500 deductible clause and, if more insurance is desired, let individuals purchase it from the private firms. Sounds good, but it's a big step, with no guarantees. And politicians, once elected, don't generally take big steps, particularly when pressured by lobbyists, as would especially be the case here. Crime Few groups can take solace in our steadily rising crime rate: safe and lock companies, schools specializing in self-defense, firearms manufacturers. Oh, and the bad guys themselves. Safety in numbers and all that. Right wing solutions being offered by political hopefuls: more policemen, stronger deterrents (The Chair, mandatory sentencing), right-to-shoot laws. More liberal answers: gun control, more parole officers, not more policemen, strong prison rehabilitation, programs bringing down the rate of unemployment. The right answer: probably a combination of both viewpoints - catch 'em, don't coddle 'em, and give 'em an alternative to the criminal lifestyle. Big government "Elect me and I'll vote myself out of office," many candidates for state government are saying. If you firmly believe that; then there's no sense telling you about the Easter Bunny. What is really being said is, "Let's reduce the size of the Legislature, make it more manageable, cheaper and efficient." Along those lines, there's talk of switching to a one-house set-up and going to single a member districts. One district, one man See CRIME, Page 51

SHOULD YOU BE TAXED MORE FOR IMPROVING YOUR HOME? MILHET SAYS NO!
Under Florida's present tax laws, the more you improve your home, the higher your taxes will become. When you're a good neighbor, paint up, fix up, add a patio or pool or new bedroom, enclose your carport or garage, your home is re-assessed and your taxes increased. If your house is neglected and deteriorates enough your taxes could go down. MILHET'S PLAN WILL AID LOCAL ECONOMY George Milhet, as your State Representative, will fight to change the law so that your home is re-assessed only when you decide to sell it. The new owner would pay the higher taxes for improvements you make. Encouraging people to improve their homes will mean better neighborhoods and millions of dollars more in building supply purchases and tradesmen payrolls.
