Embroidery won't save stitch in time, but it provides lots of creative fun
needles and pins . . . nadine wright Instant individualism! When you pick up your embroidery needle, you know you are creating a one-of-a-kind. A peasant blouse is stamped with your hall-mark when you add a hand-embroidered edging. A long skirt is another perfect showcase for your trimming tastes. Pile on rows of embroidered rib-bons, rickrack, braids and fringe. Then, make a cou-ple of rows of your own embroidered stiches with matching or contrasting floss. Because of its exquisite looks, you may think that embroidery is time con-suming and difficult. Though it does take some time, embroidery is not difficult. There are several stitch-es you can use and once you get started with a de-sign and pattern stitch, before you know it you would have completed your design in the excite-ment of seeing the fin-ished product. Use a six strand em-broidery thread or yarn, and embroidery or tapes-try needles with large eyes. An embroidery hoop will help keep your work flat and hurry the job while stitching. Create your own' design and draw it on tracing paper. Trace the design onto the fabric with dressmaker's tracing paper and a sharp pencil. You should begin your stitches by knotting thread and bringing it from the wrong side to the right side of the fab-ric. Keep stitches loose while working. When you have finished your design, press it face down with a steam iron. There are several sim-ple embroidery stitches, but the cross stitch (which resembles the let-ter "X") is one of the eas-iest of all embroidery stitches and it comes across as an intricate pat-tern. For the design, you can use a pattern transfer or design your own. To work in rows, work a color across the design from left to right, keeping needle straight between two lines of the cross. You will be making half the cross. To make the second half, work back from the right to left. Once you get involved with embroidery, there's no end to what you can create.
