Biltmore pool plans delayed while Gainer examines cost
A decision to renovate the Biltmore pool was deferred by the Coral Gables City Commission Tuesday, until the city manager can report on the total cost of rennovating the Biltmore Tower building. City Manger Martin Gainer said it would cost the city between $250,000 to $300,000 to redo the pool, which he predicted would operate at a $75,000 to $100,000 annual deficit. Gainer said that although he had made investigations into the pool project, the Tower building renovation should take priority. Gainer said local school officials were prepared to bus Gables area children to and from the pool. "All students should be taught to swim," said Commissioner Al Jacobson. "If we save one life every 10 years, the money won't be wasted. "Every elementary school child in Coral Gables, including those at Sunset Elementary, should be required to take swimming. And several parochial schools in the area would also be welcomed to do the same. Coral Gables Senior High School doesn't even have a place to swim," said Jacobson, who has been pushing for the renovation. Commissioner William Kerdyk argued that Venetian Pool is only five blocks from the Biltmore and should be considered by a school program before the city takes on such a large deficit.
Citizens security
Expressing their regrets and appreciation for his services, the commissioners approved a resolution accepting the resignation of C. W. Thompson as a member of the Citizens Security Advisory Board. George Kakouris Jr., was appointed to the board, replacing Thompson, who has been on the board since it inception.
Gables House
The firm of Severud, Knight, Boerema and Buff, 121 Majorca Ave., was selected first in the order of preference as architects for the historic renovation and restoration of Coral Gables House, formerly Merrick Manor on Coral Way. The commissioners second choice was Wray Succop and Associates, 1100 Ponce de Leon Blvd., and A. Spain & Woodrow Wilkins, 4171 Malaga Ave., was the third choice. The city manager is now authorized to negotiate a contract, beginning with the first choice and then pass to the second and third if an agreement cannot be reached.
Guitar lessons
Miami guitarist Hugh Kerr is currently teaching a class in guitar at Coral Gables Senior High Adult Center. The cost is $5 for the 15-week course. The class meets on Mondays, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. To register, stop by the center at 450 Bird Road weekdays between 2:30 and 9:30 p.m.
